Reports To : Senior Director of Special Education (or designee)

FLSA Status : Exempt

School Classification : Certificated

Pay Schedule : Range 7 ($74.292-$104,816)

  • Newly hired teachers for the 2025 / 26 school year are eligible for up to 10 years of service credit

Work Schedule : 190 days / 11 months

Location : Onsite and Remote Office

Position Summary : The moderate to severe special education teacher provides instruction at the elementary, middle, high school and / or adult transition level to students who require remedial and specialized assistance in pre-academic, academic, social emotional, behavioral, adaptive behavior, daily living, pre-vocational, college and career skill areas; and plans, develops, organizes and implements comprehensive individualized education programs (IEPs) for students with a variety of disabilities. School staff will rely on the moderate to severe special education teacher to provide consultation and educational services within the area of special education.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Case manages up to 18 moderate / severe students
  • Completes thorough initial evaluations, additional assessments and eligibility re-evaluations that comply with school, state, and federal guidelines and develop legally compliant assessment reports and IEPs
  • Uses comprehensive assessment results in developing an appropriate IEP to accommodate the wide variety of individual needs of each student
  • Conducts educational assessments related to students' access to the academic core curriculum and progress towards meeting instructional academic goals
  • Provides appropriate instruction both individually and in small groups and other special education supports to students whose needs have been identified in an IEP
  • Utilizes functional skills curriculum and / or core curriculum with modifications to develop lesson plans to instruct / remediate identified learning deficits and make progress towards agreed upon goals.
  • Develops, schedules, leads, and participates in the IEP meeting
  • Consults with various school team members, parents, outside service providers regarding student assessments, specialized instruction, accommodations and modifications, and behavior management techniques ; coordinates IEP services as needed
  • Maintains records and reports, and completes frequent progress monitoring that are required by the school, state and / or federal regulations.
  • Develops positive relationships and rapport with all staff members members
  • Communicates effectively and works collaboratively with all other school personnel and parents while maintaining confidentiality at all times
  • Participates in staff and program development related to the special methods and approaches of providing special education services
  • Attends and actively participates in regional meetings
  • Provides direct oversight for paraprofessionals serving moderate / severe students as the credentialed teacher
  • Services students in-home, if necessary
  • Proctoring duties as needed during the testing season
  • Services students during normal business hours unless prior approval has been extended by supervisor
  • Other Duties :

  • Responds to all school related communication within 24 business hours
  • Documents and refers to the school's management all formal disciplinary actions involving students; supporting management with addressing and resolving complaints from students and parents in a timely manner; ensuring compliance with the provisions of California Penal Code Section 11166 (Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act)
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE

    Education & Experience :

  • A valid, current, and appropriate California state Moderate / Severe Education Specialist credential for teaching staff. A copy of teaching credential to be provided and kept current
  • Two years of successful teaching experience in special education preferred
  • Other Qualifications :

  • State and federal background clearance (LiveScan) to work with students (Ed. Code 44237)
  • No prospective employee can report to work without this clearance being received and Human Resources notifying the immediate supervisor of this clearance
  • Proof of a clear TB test or completed tuberculosis risk assessment questionnaire and certificate of completion by a health care professional dated within the last 60 days (Ed. Code 49406 and AB 1667) upon employment and thereafter updated every four year
  • Knowledge :

  • Computer and technology literacy : Operate office equipment including a calculator, copier, fax machine, computer and assigned software.
  • Google docs, Google spreadsheets and other online collaboration tools to send and receive information
  • Basic arithmetic calculations
  • Strong content and subject-matter knowledge

  • Methods of collecting and organizing data and information
  • Proficiency in various word processing programs, Special Education Information System (SEIS) and experience using them in a professional capacity
