Description

The Department of Surgery at Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL) is seeking applications for a full-time academic bariatric surgeon to join the section of Minimally Invasive Surgery.  The section is currently comprised of eight faculty members who cover abdominal wall / hernia, foregut, and bariatric surgery.  We are seeking another surgeon to join our two existing bariatric partners with primary focus on comprehensive bariatric surgical care.

Education Requirements

Board certification or eligibility in General Surgery and specialty fellowship training in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) with substantive experience in primary and revisional bariatric surgery. Training and practice in conduct and management of gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy is required with special consideration for those with experience with revisional cases, duodenal switch and other advanced cases.  Applicants should also be candidates for or hold ASMBS fellowship certification.

Faculty appointment will be at the Assistant or Associate Professor level at the Washington University School of Medicine, contingent upon qualifications.

Teaching

The applicant will be expected to teach residents and MIS fellows (currently two clinical fellows) affiliated with Washington University School of Medicine. Participation in interdisciplinary meetings, M&M, and other teaching-related events is expected.

Research

The applicant will have the opportunity to perform translational or clinical outcomes research and take advantage of the world-class research resources available at WUSTL. There are many potential academic initiatives that include collaboration with obesity medicine, other medical and surgical specialties, bariatric patient-reported outcomes, the Department of Surgery Public Health Sciences Division, and self-directed areas of research.

Patient Care

The clinical role covers two hospitals, both of which are MBSAQIP Accredited Bariatric centers : Barnes Jewish Hospital and Barnes Jewish West County Hospital .

The applicant will participate in the clinical care of bariatric surgery patients, including inpatient services, outpatient clinics, and interdisciplinary clinical meetings with bariatric GI and obesity medicine teams. Participation in clinical outcomes review and quality improvement meetings to support the MBSAQIP Accredited Centers is expected. The applicant will share call coverage with existing MIS staff.
