Plus, you get 16 hours of personal time per calendar year (prorated based on your start date, resets every Jan.1). We also have Bereavement, Longevity, Fitness, and maternity / paternity leave.

Contractual employees receive 40 hours of contractual management leave on top of regular accruals of annual and sick leave.

Position Summary :

The Physician diagnoses, treats and helps prevent diseases and injuries that commonly occur in SCIT community and its service population. The population served is diverse and includes American Indians and Alaska Natives, entities and eligible family members who visit the Nimkee Clinic Memorial Wellness.

The Physician provides culturally-competent, medical care to patients and families, serving individuals throughout their lifespan. The Physician will also serve as the Medical Director and, as such, shares in the administrative function that directly impacts medical services and collaborates with the management team in overall planning. The Physician / Medical Director assures delivery of quality services to all patients, in keeping with the philosophy, mission and goals of SCIT Tribe. This position is contractual.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Document visits in the Electronic Health records (EHR) system in accordance with the established standards of Nimkee Clinic, MAT Clinic and the best standards of patient care, IHS guidelines and other guideline contracts.
  • Function as a member of the Medical, MAT and Behavioral Health Monthly Meetings in accordance with appropriate policies and procedures with in Nimkee Clinic setting.
  • Demonstrates a caring and helpful attitude with patients, vendors and co-workers
  • Provides direct medical clinical care to Nimkee Clinic service population
  • Prescribes or administers treatment, therapy, medication, vaccination, and other specialized medical care to treat or prevent illness, disease, or injury
  • Orders, performs, and interprets tests and analyzes records, reports, and examination information to diagnose patients' condition
  • Accurately collects, records, and maintains patient information, such as medical history, reports, or examination results
  • Consistently maintains organized electronic and physical files
  • Maintains records in accordance with established policy
  • Monitors patients' conditions and progress and reevaluates treatments as necessary
  • Explains procedures and discusses test results or prescribed treatments with patients
  • Refers patients to medical specialists or other practitioners as appropriate and when necessary
  • Supervises clinical staff, including giving regular performance appraisals and constructive feedback
  • Supervises medical assisted treatment (MAT) of addictions including alcohol and opiates, including participating in case management as a member of a multidisciplinary team
  • Actively collaborates on integration of medical services
  • Advises on medical clinical equipment purchases
  • Leads planning for new clinical services and grants
  • Provides project direction and helps to carry out grant activities and prepares reports for submission
  • Collaborates and supervises clinical care provided by Nurse Practitioners and provides supervision for Physician Assistants
  • Reviews patient medical charts for quality and provision of care consistent with Medical practice standards
  • Signs off on charts when appropriate
  • Performs or delegates responsibility for quarterly medical records review for all clinical staff focusing on quality of care
  • Promotes an environment in which the medical providers retain independent judgment and responsibility in their medical practices
  • Maintains, reviews, and updates medical policies and procedures annually; assists to develop policies and procedures as needed to assure quality care
  • Assists in creating medical protocol standards and ensures that providers practice to the accepted standards of care
  • Collaborates with health service team regarding compliance, risk, quality, safety, and improvement initiatives
  • Complies with established clinical protocols, accepted standards of care, confidentiality and privacy laws and policies and procedures of Nimkee Clinic in performing duties
  • Coordinates leave and continuing education requests with HHS Director and medical providers well in advance to ensure adequate coverage of the clinic
  • Maintains physician licensure, board certification and DEA license in good standing
  • Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Has supervisory responsibility to direct daily activities of Health Practioners and other assigned support staff.

  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Tribal policies and procedures
  • Supervise and educate personnel to ensure compliance with Tribal policies and procedures
  • Responsible for the recruitment, training, evaluation, and discipline of assigned staff
  • Manages schedules to ensure adequate coverage to meet the operational needs for the clinic (may be required to perform support staff functions in the absence of designated staff)
  • Contacts / Purpose of Contacts :

  • Contact with other health professionals, staff, and community resources to exchange information, for collaboration and consultation, and to provide education.
  • Contact with outside vendors, hospitals, pharmaceutical representatives, medical sales, laboratory services and other services provided through the medical department.
  • Contact with community members, Tribal Health Board and Tribal Council.
  • Minimum Qualifications :

  • MD or DO from an accredited medical school in the United States
  • Board Certified in clinical specialty, preferably in Family Practice
  • Current State of Michigan medical license without exclusions or sanctions
  • Possess waiver, certifications, and appropriate training to prescribe FDA-approved medications for the treatment of addictions including alcohol and opiates OR willingness to complete required trainings and applications within the first three months of hire
  • Current DEA licensure
  • License, Certification, or Special Requirements :

  • Ability to obtain HIPAA Certification, Blood Borne Pathogens Certification, BLS Certification and Safety Training within thirty days of hire.
  • Native American preference shall apply to all positions.

  • Physical Demands :

  • Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with computer equipment.
  • Required to sit and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally stand and reach with arms.
  • Normal visual acuity, ability to talk and hear.
  • Occasionally lift and / or move up to 20 pounds.
  • Work Environment :

  • Medical clinic and normal office environment.
  • Potential risk of exposure to bodily fluids such as blood and saliva and / or the potential for needle sticks and / or skin puncture.
  • Latex may be used in the office which can produce allergic reactions.
  • Potential contact with chemicals and / or cleaning reagents utilized within the clinic.
  • Employee may be exposed to unpleasant odors, radiation, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous material and infectious disease.
  • Situations occur where surgical masks, safety goggles, gloves and protective face shields are needed.
  • Occasional non-traditional hours including working evenings, weekends and holidays as assigned to meet program needs and deadlines
  • Ability and willingness to travel for program requirements, meetings and continuing education
