Saginaw Valley State University is excited to announce we are seeking an innovative and visionary researcher to join their team as a founding director of the proposed Malcom Field Biomedical Sciences Institute (MFBSI). Ideal candidates will have a proven track record of significant contributions to advanced research and development programs, and expertise in overseeing student/resident research and managing scientific labs. Projects will focus on both biomedical science research and translational research.
JOB SUMMARY: The Director will coordinate and promote biomedical research at SVSU by fostering collaboration among existing researchers and seeking new opportunities to expand. The Institute will serve as a hub to enhance the visibility of biomedical science at SVSU and strengthen its connection to key partners in the region. A successful candidate will forge meaningful partnerships aimed at fostering a culture of collaboration and multidisciplinary approaches to propel the Institute toward high-impact biomedical research excellence.
Housed in Bachand Hall, the Institute will be the central point of engagement for research collaboration primarily between the Crystal M Lange College for Health and Human Services, and the College of Science, Engineering & Technology, with additional programs from other colleges within SVSU. The Institute will start out as a next-generation researchers’ initiative that will provide established investigators a place to develop interdisciplinary teams that incorporate collaboration and innovation with the goal of improving the health and enhancing the lives of all people. The Director will be responsible for establishing policies, procedures, and infrastructure, and translating research to the public. With a strategic mission focused on the underpinnings of health and diseases, as well as metabolic disorders, infectious diseases, and developing applications for technologies for addressing health-related diseases. The goals of the Institute include:

Increase the breadth and intensity of the University’s biomedical sciences through interdisciplinary collaboration across colleges and departments.
- Advance knowledge and set standards in biomedical science.
- Collaborate with faculty to integrate biomedical sciences research across relevant curriculum.

Collaborate with non-profit, biotech, and pharmaceutical companies to explore new technologies in the area of biomedical science.
- Enhance the visibility and reputation of SVSU as a leader in biomedical and behavioral research.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manage operational activities of the Institute and collaborate with faculty, students, and staff.
- Write grants that focus on interdisciplinary biomedical sciences.

Recruit current SVSU faculty to collaborate on interdisciplinary biomedical research projects.

Teach within their discipline, normally not to exceed 9 faculty load hours/year.

Encourage and support student research in the area of biomedical sciences.

Budget Administration (e.g., grants, and fellowship funds, start-up funds, etc.).

Collaborate revisioning of the existing lab space in HHS.

Coordinate and promote biomedical research activities on campus.

Establish partnerships with healthcare systems, non-profits, biotech, and pharmaceutical companies to explore new technologies in biomedical sciences.

Execute projects through development of experimental designs, critical analysis, and interpretation of results and communication of results promptly.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
General supervision is received from the Dean of College of Health and Human Services
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Functional supervision is exercised over lab staff.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

PhD degree, or terminal degree, in biomedical sciences or related field.

Three (3) to Five (5) years research experience.

Comprehensive knowledge in the field of biomedical sciences research, and ability to thrive in fast-paced, multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience in identifying and obtaining external funding.
- Self-motivated with excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to work effectively in a dynamic and collaborative, fast-paced environment.

Ability to work as part of a team with a drive to partner effectively with internal/external collaborators.

Strong organizational skills that enable multitasking and working within timelines.
- Experience and ability to positively interact with a diverse campus community.
- Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodations.
PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstrated track record of publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals.
