Description
SAIC is seeking an individual with a graduate degree in biomedical engineering, biophysics, biochemistry, physiology, or related fields. The individual will work under the guidance of US Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) and SAIC scientists on projects investigating the biological effects of laser exposure. This will be a full-time position based at the Air Force Research Laboratory location in San Antonio, Texas.
Responsibilities:
- Plan and execute in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo research studies to characterize the biological repercussions of laser exposure.
- Determine and implement best techniques for observation and measurement of optically-induced changes in tissue morphology and functionality.
- Establish and maintain familiarity with current published literature on laser bioeffects.
- Collaborate and coordinate with other scientists, engineers, pathologists, medical doctors, and technicians on multi-disciplinary projects.
- Provide regular updates to principle investigators on project progress.
- Document study methods and results in the form of data archives, PowerPoint slides, technical reports, conference proceedings, and peer-reviewed journal articles.
Qualifications
Required qualifications:
- Masters (0-5 years experience) or doctoral (0-2 years experience) degree in biomedical engineering, biophysics, biology, biochemistry, physiology, or related field.
- Experience in a professional or academic biomedical research environment.
- Demonstrated technical writing proficiency.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret level security clearance.
Desired qualifications:
- Classwork and/or practical experience with optical physics, thermodynamics, computational modeling, biomedical instrumentation, and/or biomedical statistics.
- Experience and comfort with laboratory animal research, particularly in preparing and executing studies under the purview of an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
- Proficiency with MatLab, Python, Excel, or other data processing environments.
- Experience working with pathology data, such as images of histology slides processed with H&E staining, immunohistochemistry, necropsy results, and accompanying reports.
- Familiarity with burn research and the anatomy and physiology of skin.
