Our student-athletes compete hard, but more importantly, they compete with a mindset of effort, teamwork and sportsmanship. Through their participation in athletics, they make lifelong friendships and learn many life lessons. The Head Girl's Water Polo Coach is an important position that is responsible for spearheading the Water Polo program in support of the vision of Saint Francis High School.
The Head Varsity Girl's Water Polo Coach is responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
Foundational:
- Support of School Mission - supporting the academic, spiritual and social mission of the school. It is expected that the head coach keeps abreast of students academic performances. Finally, it is expected that the head coach support the spiritual mission of the school by coordinating a program mass, prayer before athletic contests and a varsity service project.
- Establishment of Program Philosophy - establishment and maintenance of a program philosophy (philosophy, skills, techniques..), including a team handbook, that will be shared with all levels of the program as well as students and families. All athletic department philosophies including those of effort, teamwork and sportsmanship should also be shared with our coaches, student-athletes and parent communities
- Attendance - attending all required school, league and section meetings and being properly prepared for such meetings
- Coaching Candidates - assisting the athletic director in finding and interviewing potential coaching candidates in the sport
- Knowledge - maintaining a knowledge of all sport, school, league, section and state rules and bylaws
- Professional Development - continually updating oneself and staff in the areas of professional development both in and out of your sport.
- Certifications - completion of all coaches certifications including the state CIF class as well as current First Aid and CPR classes
- Promotion of Program - coordinating marketing and promotion of the program along with the athletic director
Operational:
- Scheduling - establishing non-league matches, tournaments or games for the varsity, JV, and freshman levels. All schedules must be approved and reviewed by the athletic director. The head coach is also responsible for coordinating with the athletic department on practice schedules for all levels.
- Equipment - all equipment and uniform needs of the program. All equipment orders will be made in consultation with the equipment manager
- Summer Advanced Camp - planning, organizing and running a Saint Francis summer advanced camp in consultation with the camp director to provide opportunities for younger athletes in your sport.
- Summer Program - coordinating an offseason workout program Saint Francis athletes in his/her sport in consultation with the athletic director
- Pre-Season Program - coordinating a pre-season conditioning/lifting program in conjunction with WCAL bylaws
- Supervision - coordinating supervision of student athletes before, during and after workouts
- Paperwork - coordinating team forms for all student-athletes in the program; responsible for verifying physical forms before tryouts and all necessary forms once season starts; verifying paperwork clearance on all transfer students; completing all school, league, and section paperwork in a timely fashion. Coordinate tournament sanctioning with the Athletic department.
- Meetings - planning pre-season meetings with coaching staff to discuss philosophy, expectations, teaching technique, the upcoming year, and any other issues seen as relevant; the head coach is also responsible for planning and putting on a pre-season parent/student meeting and an end of the year banquet.
- Support Staff - coordinating the support staff for the program (team managers, statisticians, film crew, social media managers etc.)
- Budget - coordinating with the athletic director on all budget concerns; it is also the head coaches responsibility to make sure the program acts in compliance with the stated budget
- Evaluation - coordinating a review and evaluation of all staff members with the athletic director
- College Process - working with student-athletes, counselors and families in regards to the college recruitment process
- Transportation - coordinating with the athletic department on all transportation requests; some sports also require off campus facility and transportation issues)
Competition:
- Tryouts - administering a tryout period for their sport; the tryout period must last at least 5 practices and students must be given a list of items that they will be evaluated on during this tryout period
- Practice - scheduling practice times with the Athletic office; preparing for daily practice with a written practice plan; the head coach is also responsible to attend daily practice and coach our student athletes in proper and correct techniques
- Scouting - scouting of all future opponents
- Game Day Responsibilities - coordinating all game day responsibilities for their program to include: set-up, take down, scoreboard operators, other game-day personnel.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have experience coaching at the high school or college level. Candidates should have experience working, playing or coaching in a values-based educational program.
- A high school diploma or GED certificate and an associate degree
- Certification from a state agency, NCAA, or other organization that oversees the sport
- DOJ/FBI clearance
- Relevant volunteer experience
- Communication skills, decision-making skills, dedication, interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and resourcefulness
