Organizational Overview

Saint John’s Program for Real Change mission is to provide a safe space for women and children to heal and develop the skills necessary to transform their lives. We accomplish our mission by holding to our vision to end the generational cycle of trauma and homelessness.

 

We operate the largest residential program for formerly homeless women and children in the Sacramento region providing services 24 hours/day, 365 days/year, offering shelter, meals, childcare, and comprehensive support services, including Behavioral Health Services, Hands-on Employment Training, Career Education, and Family Services.

TITLE                          Chief Financial Officer            

SALARY                      From $130,000 To $150,000 Annually

CLASSIFICATION       Full-Time, Exempt

LOCATION                  On Site Only – Jackson Rd. Sacramento, CA

SCHEDULE                 Monday- Friday, 9:00 am to 5:30 pm

 

About the Position…

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a critical member of the leadership team, responsible for overseeing all aspects of financial strategy, planning, and operations. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the CFO will manage the organization’s financial health and sustainability, lead a team of 2-3 staff accountants, and provide strategic guidance to support Saint John’s mission. This role requires a hands-on leader capable of balancing high-level strategic thinking with detailed operational management in a complex environment due to rigorous requirements for compliance with government grants and contracts. This is a full-time, onsite position at our Sacramento location.

 

You’ll be responsible for…

Financial Strategy and Planning

  • Develop and implement the organization’s financial strategy to ensure long-term sustainability and alignment with its mission
  • Lead the annual budgeting process, provide accurate forecasts and actional insights to guide decision making
  • Present financial reports to the CEO, board of directors, and board finance committee, offering analysis and recommendations
  • Develop and monitor financial metrics, KPI’s, and dashboards to evaluate organizational performance

 

Financial Operations

  • Oversee day-to-day financial operations, including accounts payable accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger functions
  • Supervise financial department staff including 2-3 staff accountants, ensuring the accuracy and timelines of financial transactions and reports
  • Ensure compliance with all financial regulations, including nonprofit specific requirements such as IRS form 990 filings, audits and grants and government contracts reporting
  • Manage cash flow, reserves, and investments to optimize the organization's financial position
  • Oversee and coordinate grant accounting reporting with Saint John’s COO, ensuring compliance and funder requirements

 

Risk Management and Compliance

  • Maintain and improve internal controls to safeguard the organization’s assets
  • Lead financial audits and collaborate with external auditors to ensure timely and accurate reporting
  • Monitor and mitigate organizational risks related to finances and compliance

 

Strategic Leadership

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO, Board of Directors, contributing to organizational strategy and planning
  • Collaborate with program and developments teams to align financial resources with programmatic goals and fundraising strategies
  • Represent the organization externally in financial negotiations with funders, banks, and partners
  • Serve on the Leadership team comprised of the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Program Officer, Chief Philanthropy and Marketing Officer, and Chief Human Resource Officer, and the Management team, inclusive of the leadership team and departmental directors

 

You must have...

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in finance or accounting, or a related field; CPA, CMA, or MBA strongly preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 8 years of financial leadership experience, including at least 3 years’ experience in a nonprofit setting
  • Strategic Thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders
  • Proficiency in financial software (e.g., QuickBooks)
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop teams
  • Commitment to the organization’s mission and values
  • Fluent in English language (spoken and written)
  • Proficient knowledge of email, copiers, fax, and internet
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite
  • An incredible passion for our mission
  • Database knowledge for Bill.com and QuickBooks

 

Physical Requirements

  • Standing/walking approximately 20% and sitting 80% of the time
  • Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to hear and respond to simple and sometimes critical messages exchanged in noisy/high traffic areas.
