The Department of Criminal Justice at Saint Joseph’s College of Maine invites applications for a full-time, on-campus, Instructor appointment (with potential to become a tenure track assistant professor position) to begin in the Fall of 2025.

The Department of Criminal Justice strongly believes in the Mission of Saint Joseph’s College of Maine and seeks to enhance the intellectual and social growth of students by exposing them to courses that balance the liberal arts tradition of the college and the professions. The Department of Criminal Justice seeks to develop a critical mindset for its students through academic rigor and a significant involvement in the learning process. The Department provides a plethora of opportunities to develop critical thinking skills, practice social research, enhance professional communication skills, and improve awareness of global issues.

The major in Criminal Justice provides students with an academically sound understanding of crime, justice, and the criminal justice system. Students majoring in Criminal Justice receive a foundation in theory and research as well as opportunities for practical application through an internship within the field. This major is for students who may pursue careers over a wide range of criminal justice opportunities within the city, state, and federal jurisdictions - such as law enforcement, corrections, security, victim advocacy, law, juvenile justice, social services, and much more. Students are also encouraged to think about a possible minor in another area of study.

This position will contribute to our growing Criminal Justice program. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses including: Introduction to Criminal Justice, Scientific Methods in Criminal Justice, Quantitative Analysis for Criminal Justice, and Criminology, as well as elective courses in their specialty area as needed. All specialist subject areas will be considered.

Position Description:
This Instructor position will require a teaching load of 12 credits per semester, which will typically consist of a 3-4 course load, attendance at department meetings, faculty senate meetings, and service on campus committees.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • A PhD in Criminal Justice or Criminology; ABD status will be considered
  • Relevant teaching experience in various modalities in on-campus higher education
  • Commitment to using up-to-date and best practice pedagogical methods, including syllabus and curriculum design
  • Willingness to prioritize student learning and to form genuine connections with students

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with high impact learning practices, including service learning and community based learning
  • Experience with supervising student research projects
  • Experience with developing and sustaining partnerships with agencies and organizations in the field of criminal justice
