Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:
Under the direction of the Director of Student Disability Services, the Disability Specialist has broad responsibility for ensuring that the University community understands and complies with federal and state statues that affect conditions and educational opportunities for individuals with disabilities. The Disability Specialist works closely with the Director and Assistant Director of Student Disability Services to oversee University-wide disability support services and provide equal access to curricular and co-curricular activities for all students who qualify for accommodations. The Disabililty Specialist works collaboratively with campus partners to foster academic and professional success for individuals with disabilities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as a University contact for current and prospective students and parents regarding accommodations for students with disabilities.
- Collaborate with the Director and Assistant Director of Student Disability Services in conducting intake interviews to identify students’ needs and to explain eligibility requirements for services and accommodations.
- Ensure implementation of reasonable accommodations that maintain essential course requirements and are consistent with the course of study and policies at the University.
- Collaborate with faculty and administrators to implement reasonable accommodations for course-specific pedagogy and assessment for classroom, lab, clinical, experiential and online learning environments.
- Direct the provision of support services to students with documented disabilities, including readers, scribes, note-takers, audio books, captionists, sign language interpreters and other assistive technology materials.
- Coordinate the scheduling, tracking, and supervision of the Testing Center. This will include communicating with professors about tests and exams to be proctored in the Testing Center as well as overseeing the students who utilize the Testing Center.
- Ensure the academic integrity of the Testing Center by closely monitoring all transactions with exams including the proctoring of the exams, maintaining confidential security of the exams, and reporting incidents of academic dishonesty when applicable.
- Evaluate and obtain assistive technologies for students with disabilities
- Co-host University-wide education and training on processes of the Office of Student Disability Services including compliance with ADA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and related federal and state regulations; usage of Accommodate data management system for faculty and students; disability and inclusion awareness programming.
- Engage in professional development webinars, trainings and seminars in order to keep current with changes to laws, policies and procedures related to disability services and to advance knowledge of how to best to serve students with disabilities in higher education.
- Support University Programs: Open Houses, Admitted Student Days, New Student Orientation, Move-in Weekend and Commencement.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Act as a Data Security Steward to include: Responsibility for the accuracy, security and integrity of data within the area; creating and maintaining a secure office environment to protect all information resources within your purview; establishing and enforcing sound policies and procedures to manage the information resources assigned to you, (may delegate responsibility to Data Security Officer in order to assist with the day-to-day management of information); serving in compliance with the University’s Data Stewardship Policy statement. The person who holds this position has been classified as a Campus Security -Authority under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy andCampus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act).
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:
Ability and willingness to work occasional weekend and evenings hours proctoring exams and staffing University events.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree and 1-3 years’ experience working with individuals with disabilities
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of State and Federal laws pertaining to students with disabilities
- Ability to work with diverse populations.
- Strong computer skills and familiarity with assistive technology and software
- Ability to triage, establish priorities and meet tight deadlines as well as balance varying demands of office activities and handle conflicting demands calmly and professionally.
- Master’s Degree
- Experience in a post-secondary or higher education setting preferred.
- Knowledgeable in Canvas, Accommodate, Banner, Cognos, Excel, Google suite products& Starf
