Associate Educator, Guide Programs
Summary: To manage the recruitment, selection, initial, and ongoing training for the Museum’s volunteer and paid guide programs in order to provide guide-led tours and other facilitated gallery-based engagement offerings that result in positive visitor experiences.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop and manage a recruitment plan to attract a diverse group of guide applicants; review applications, interview candidates, and make final selections in consultation with Head of Engagement and Interpretation.
Develop and serve as the lead instructor/facilitator for a new docent training curriculum that includes content presented from multiple perspectives related to the Museum’s collection as well as best touring practices and teaching techniques delivered in an accessible manner.
Develop, recruit participants, and manage an on-call, paid engagement guide program for selected ticketed exhibitions.
Develop and manage a schedule of ongoing training for existing guides approximately 35 sessions/year) which engages both internal and external experts focusing on collection and exhibition content from multiple perspectives, best teaching and touring techniques, and increasing awareness of DEAI issues.
Coordinate and conduct annual guide evaluations, including any recognition or remediation.
Collaborate with Teacher and Student Learning educators to train and supervise guides who deliver staff-designed K-12 touring programs.
Collaborate with the Youth and Family Learning educator to train and supervise guides who deliver pre-K and family-centered programs.
Collaborate with guides to deliver engaging collection and exhibition tours, Member tour programs, accessible tours, tours for visitors experiencing memory loss and their caregivers, and other tours for a wide range of audiences, pre-K through adult.
Collaborate with the Tour Experience Coordinator to ensure smooth tour scheduling and logistics.
Identify cultural organizations and community groups with which to form cooperative relationships. Establish and maintain strong cooperative relationships with cultural organizations and community groups.
Develop a comprehensive knowledge of the Museum’s collections and exhibitions. Partner with curators and Learning and Engagement staff to offer workshops to augment formal guide trainings.
Facilitate in-person and virtual tours for all ages and audiences, as needed.
Prepare and manage Guide Programs budgets.
Serve as a Museum ambassador and advocate for DEAI initiatives as they relate to Guide Programs.
Participate in cross-functional teams, projects, and initiatives and contribute to Museum-wide projects as appropriate.
Collaborate with colleagues in Digital Experience and Media, Development, Marketing, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and Visitor and Member Services on implementation and communication of guide programs and other guided in-gallery opportunities.
Qualifications: Master’s degree in art history (preferred), or in museum education, museum studies, art education, or related field. Three or more years of experience teaching and/or engaging visitors in museums or other informal educational settings. Work experience with volunteers and community partners with demonstrated ability to lead and coach visitor guides. Or, an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some evening and weekend work is required. Proficiency with Microsoft Suite required. Preferred: Budget experience. Experience with WordPress, TMS, and Piction.

Minimum of Hiring Range: $57,141/annually
