Position Title: Academic & Guidance Counselor
Department: Counseling Reports To: Director of Counseling
Job Status: Full-time, 12-month, Exempt


Position Overview

The Academic & Guidance Counselor is responsible for delivering a comprehensive school counseling program that is proactive, developmental, and designed to support Saint Louis students in academic achievement, individual planning, and personal and social growth. This role involves direct student engagement through individual and group counseling, consultation with faculty and parents, and active participation in campus-wide programs.


Key Responsibilities

Student Support Services

  • Provide direct services to students, focusing on preventive and responsive counseling, including individual academic planning.
  • Assist students in preparing for transitions to post-secondary education, career pathways, and independent living through individualized planning and classroom guidance.
  • Collaborate with parents/guardians and educators to develop effective academic plans for students.
  • Facilitate access to community resources for families through appropriate referrals and follow-up.
  • Support teachers by providing insights on student needs, including the interpretation of academic data and standardized test results.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Counseling.

Counseling Services

  • Implement responsive counseling strategies that build positive relationships and promote understanding of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Conduct structured, goal-oriented counseling sessions that address topics such as academic skills, social development, career exploration, conflict resolution, and healthy decision-making.
  • Support student transitions from middle to high school and from high school to post-graduation pathways through targeted counseling services.
  • Provide individual counseling as needed

Individual Planning

  • Act as a liaison to coordinate school activities, resources, and communication between students, families, school staff, community agencies, and industry partners.
  • Advocate for equitable access to programs and services for all students.
  • Coordinate Learning Support Plans and manage standardized testing logistics.
  • Organize and deliver parent education programs to support student transitions.

Curriculum Management

  • Develop, deliver, evaluate, and refine a sequential and developmentally appropriate school counseling curriculum focused on academic success, personal growth, and social awareness.
  • Collaborate with faculty and community resources to support student learning.

Professionalism

  • Foster positive relationships with students, parents, faculty, and staff.
  • Uphold ethical standards and best practices as prescribed by state and national school counselor associations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of local policies, state, and federal regulations related to school counseling.
  • Commit to ongoing professional growth and development.
Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Psychology, School Counseling, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in school counseling, preferably at the high school level.
  • Proficiency in academic and college readiness platforms such as MaiaLearning.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated commitment to personal growth and leadership development.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a high school counseling setting.
  • Familiarity with independent school culture, boys' education, and Catholic educational values.
  • Attributes such as teamwork, organization, adaptability, attention to detail, accountability, humor, and a positive attitude.
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as required.
