The Seasonal Assistant Gardener assists in maintaining the grounds of Saint Mary's University in all functions related to seasonal planning, summer maintenance and fall cleanup.
Salary: $17.00/Hourly
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs daily grounds operations: planting, weeding, transplanting, watering, deadheading, tilling, spraying, fertilizing, pruning, landscaping and mulching.
- Assists with seasonal projects as directed.
- Works with student workers.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND FUNCTIONS
- Knowledge of equipment operation including, but not limited to hand shovels, trimmers and associated grounds equipment.
- Knowledge and use of personnel protective equipment (PPE).
- Highly organized, attention detailed, manage multiple tasks efficiently and effectively.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work effectively alone and within a team environment.
- Good attendance and punctuality.
- Observes safety guidelines at all times and follow work procedures established by the university.
Working Conditions:
- Work requires a large extent of standing, walking, bending, stooping, lifting, stretching, pushing, carrying, climbing, kneeling, grabbing, auditory and visual acuity, color discrimination and manual dexterity required on a daily basis.
- Objects frequently required to be lifted, pushed, pulled and/or carried range from 25 - 50 pounds occasionally with assistance.
- Exposure to a variety of hazardous chemicals on a daily basis, using PPE when necessary.
- Work is performed in wide range of outdoor weather conditions.
- Exposure to machinery/motor noise and fumes on a daily basis.

- High school diploma or equivalent.
