PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER

Reports To: Head of School

Primary Purpose: The primary purpose of the physical education teacher is to provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to support their potential intellectual, emotional, spiritual, physical and social growth, with particular emphasis on healthy habits for a lifetime and physical skill development.

Qualifications:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
  • Teacher certification preferred

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Knowledge of developmental issues of assigned student group(s)
  • Knowledge of subject(s) assigned
  • Ability to develop rapport with children
  • Calm and patient demeanor with students and others
  • Good communicator verbally and in written form
  • Skill in the use of technology for communication and for instruction

Experience

  • Some experience working with children in an instructional setting preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Instructional Strategies

  • Develop and implement plans for the physical education program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Present subject matter according to guidelines established by Saint Paul’s Episcopal Day School.
  • Seek and implement excellent and age appropriate approaches to physical education at all levels.
  • Cooperate with other members of the faculty and staff in developing and implementing instructional outcomes, objectives, and methods according to school requirements.
  • Adjust instruction to address individual student’s talents and needs.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional/learning strategies, activities, materials to challenge and stimulate student learning.
  • Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and/or volunteers.
  • Provide complete guidelines and lesson plans for substitutes in the event of absence.
  • Use technologies in the teaching/learning process.
  • Assist students in analyzing and improving physical skills and healthy habits for life.
  • Consistently assess students’ achievement through formal and informal assessment.
  • Complete report cards quarterly.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of student assessments, discipline, and other pertinent information about students.
  • Provide a positive role model that supports the mission of the school.

Classroom Management and Organization

  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom and administer discipline according to well-defined classroom guidelines and school procedures and policies.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Assist in selection of equipment and instructional materials for the classroom(s).
  • Assist in the development of a budget that supports the mission and strategic plan of the school.

Public Relations

  • Maintain a positive attitude at all times to faculty, staff, students, clergy, parishioners, and visitors.
  • Establish and maintain an open line of communication with students and their parents.
  • Maintain professional relationships with all colleagues, students, parents and community members.
  • Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

The Episcopal Nature of the School and the School’s Mission

  • Support the Episcopal nature of the school at all times.
  • Carry out the school’s mission.

Other

  • Maintain absolute confidentiality with all sensitive and legal matters.
  • Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events, as needed.
  • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible.
  • Comply with all school regulations, policies and procedures for classroom teachers.
  • Assist in the organization and preparation of the athletic program.
  • Serve on staff committees as needed.
  • Maintain and uphold the standards of the school accrediting body: Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools (SAES)
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Head or Division Lead.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision of children and instructional aides as appropriate.

  • Frequent standing, stooping; bending; kneeling; pushing and pulling.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lb.
