As a Structural Engineer for projects, you will be required to demonstrate a high standard of professionalism and client focus/customer service; be resourceful and flexible, effective at handling multiple tasks; have good computer skills; have strong presentation, written and verbal skills; and be able to effectively delegate or be delegated to while working in a collaborative format with multiple team members.
You will be required to:
- Listen to our clients’ needs and independently provide value to our clients by evaluating options based upon the client’s needs and desires, first cost and life cycle cost.
- Communicate your design recommendations to our clients, project team, construction contractors and vendors in presentations, meetings, via email and phone as necessary.
- Work alone on projects, or work on project team with other technical staff to design and detail the new structural systems that are needed, assuring that the work is accurate and coordinated, and that the quality assurance measures have been followed.
- Provide timely services that meet the needs of the clients and the overall project schedule requirements.
- Maintain appropriate contact with our existing clients so that they think of our firm when services our needed.
Specifically, you will be required to:
- Lead the pursuit of projects for new and existing clients by meeting with them to discuss the projects, conducting presentation and writing proposals.
- Provide the technical assessment of potential project opportunities to aide in project go/no-go decisions.
- Lead and oversee the work of other engineers and designers as a Project Design Lead or a Project Manager to develop project deliverables.
- Perform structural analysis and design calculation following office structural design standards.
- Stay abreast of new design and analysis technologies, and building materials through continuing education activities.
Specific design related services include:
- Building foundation design including shallow and deep foundations
- Concrete pit and trench design
- Soil retention design including those for temporary construction
- Slab on grade and elevated slab design
- Equipment lifting design and layout
- Fall protection design for general industry and construction
- Building design using steel, concrete, masonry and wood
- Connection design
- Equipment support design and layout
- Mechanical process piping supports.
- Develop specification documents
Requirements and Preferences
Applicants should have a minimum of a BS in Civil Engineering with a focus on Structures and a minimum of 8 years of experience in the design of industrial, power generation and commercial facilities and structures. Applicants should have a working knowledge of Structural Analysis and Design Software (specifically RAM suite preferred) as well as BIM strategies using Revit and Navisworks. A Professional Engineering license is required and a Structural Engineering license is preferred.
The Physical and Ergonomic Requirements of this position are as follows:
- Lifting/carrying: Carrying light loads related to field measurement equipment, equipment cases weighing 15 lbs. or less.
- Dexterity: Ability to type using a keyboard with relative efficiency, ability to make handwritten notes and sketches indoors and outdoors at industrial plant and construction sites at any time of the year.
- Walking/Climbing: Ability to use multi-level stair towers and rung ladders unassisted.
- Visual Acuity: Ability to discern single line and 3 dimensional computer images representing objects being designed or drafted.
- Hearing: Ability to hear safety alarms and signals while wearing hearing protection.
- Physical exertion: Ability to walk up to one mile on industrial plant and construction sites outdoors at any time of the year. Ability to work in protective clothing which may elevate body temperatures by several degrees Fahrenheit for periods of up to 15 minutes without a break.
- Breathing: Ability to work while wearing a respirator or self-contained breathing apparatus.
