Salas O’Brien is seeking a motivated Structural Engineer to join our multi-disciplinary design firm in Decatur, AL. The qualified applicant will have the opportunity to engage in all phases of a project from inception to completion of construction. This involvement is intended to grow individuals and nurture design talents.
As a Structural Engineer for projects, you will be required to demonstrate a high standard of professionalism and client focus/customer service; be resourceful and flexible, effective at handling multiple tasks; have good computer skills; have strong presentation, written, and verbal skills; and be able to effectively delegate or be delegated to while working in a collaborative format with multiple team members.
Types of Projects Include:
- Process Equipment structures and foundation design which include pumps, exchangers, rotating equipment, pressure vessels, reactors, and tanks
- Structural designs for ladders, platforms, stairs, and walkways
- Piping support design ranging from using single tee posts to installing multi-level pipe racks
- Provide calculations for existing structural evaluations which may include both dead/live loads, wind loads and earthquake loads
Job Responsibilities
- Provide designs for new and modification type Structural projects for clients in chemical processing and industrial facilities.
- Serve as project manager or as lead discipline engineer on projects as appropriate.
- Work with engineers and designers of various disciplines to ensure safe, timely, efficient designs that comply with company and client policies and procedures and applicable codes and standards.
- Produce detailed design calculations and sketches for materials of construction associated with the project. Calculations produced shall be neatly prepared and organized for efficient checking by others and efficient use by drafters/designers for preparing drawings and as a deliverable when required.
- Direct designers in the development of Structural installation drawings, data sheets and specifications, to meet customer specifications and applicable codes.
- Provide project leadership to ensure communication and execution of work within scope, schedule, and budget by monitoring project progress, coordinating activities, and resolving problems.
- Recognize and communicate scope and design changes to client in a timely manner.
- Estimate material, labor and engineering costs associated with Civil/Structural projects.
- Prepare specifications for purchase of material.
- Produce effective and accurate written scopes of work, technical documents, and reports.
- Perform periodic design reviews; ensure designs follow specifications, codes, regulations, and contract requirements. Ensure technical and quality standards are maintained.
- Prepare contractor bid packages as required.
- Visit construction sites to inspect completed installations and observe operations to ensure conformance to design and equipment specifications and compliance with operational and safety standards.
- Perform field engineering and structural inspections by documenting deficiencies and developing formal reports including recommendations to correct issues.
- Build and maintain client relationships while promoting and integrating company-wide initiatives and values.
- Maintain a safe work environment by adhering to all company and customer safety policies
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a Structural Focus from ABET accredited institution
- Professional Engineering License in the State of Alabama, or the ability to obtain
reciprocity within 6 months of hire. - 4 or more Years’ experience in Consulting Engineering field (Industrial setting preferred)
- Thorough knowledge and experience with engineering, designing and project
management of Structural projects. - Knowledge of technical responsibilities of other disciplines associated with Structural designs
- Working knowledge of industry and regulatory codes, standards, criteria, and design execution pertinent to structural engineering such as IBC, ACI, AISC, ASCE, AWS, ASME Crane Codes, etc.
- Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, RISA 3D, Enercalc or other modeling software.
- Experience in writing and providing support documentation for Structural Engineering calculations
- Working knowledge of structural analysis software for structural designs.
- Experience in the design of concrete, masonry, and steel structures in an industrial facility
- Knowledgeable of structural dynamics (seismic, wind, etc.)
- Knowledgeable of equipment foundation design and analysis
- Working knowledge of the evaluation and inspection of industrial and commercial equipment foundations, structural foundations, process equipment support structures, piping supports.
- High level of personal integrity, and dedication to conducting business ethically
- Ability to independently work and manage competing priorities
- Verbally express technical issues in a clear and concise manner
- Outstanding interpersonal skills with peers, colleagues, and clients
Preferences:
- Master's Degree with Structural Engineering focus
- Active NCEES Record with the ability to obtain licensing in multiple states
- Previous Industrial/Plant consulting experience as a Structural Design Engineer.
Physical Requirements:
- Perform indoor and outdoor site visits and inspections that requires bending, stooping, and climbing
- Ability to work in heavy industrial locations while wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Operate computer workstation using Microsoft Office applications and various engineering software
