Position Description

The Equine Caregiver provides animal residents with the highest care, kindness, and compassion. The position works closely with the Facility Manager and shares responsibilities to ensure overall secure and safe living spaces and provide ample animal enrichment opportunities. Other responsibilities include supervising on-site animal care interns and volunteers. The position reports directly to the Founder of Sale Ranch.

Primary Responsibilities

• Animal feeding/watering and maintaining animal feed schedule
• Daily health care and treatments
• grooming and turn outs
• Individual animal health checks
• Health care projects-including managing orders for feed, medications, and medical supplies.
• Shelter cleaning projects
• Enrichment activities for equine
• Reporting animal health and shelter issues directly to the Founder
• Other duties as directed

LOCATION

Sale Ranch is in Temecula Wine Country, approximately 20 minutes from the city of Temecula.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position is approximately 16- 20 hr/week, four to five days a week. The successful candidate is self-directed and maintains flexibility with a shifting workload.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Must have two years of current equine experience
• Must have a strong desire and ability to perform hands-on shelter work
• Must have good animal behavior observation skills
• Able to work in all weather conditions
• Able to perform strenuous physical labor and lift at least 40 pounds
• Must be comfortable working independently; employees have individual work assignments each day
• Must be able to follow detailed instructions and maintain animal care schedules
• Must be a team player with the ability to work well with a variety of people, including volunteers
• Must be punctual and dependable
• Must be able to maintain composure in stressful situations
• Must have own transport and hold a valid driver's license with a clean driving record
• Must be flexible with schedule and available on weekends
• Vegan preferred

Formed in 2012, Sale Ranch Animal Sanctuary is a 100% off-grid nonprofit in Temecula, California. We offer rescue and refuge to animals discarded by our food industry, hospice to senior horses, and those with ongoing medical needs. Our mission is to rescue and rehabilitate farm animals and educate the community on their behalf, promoting cruelty-free lifestyles and reducing our impact on the earth.

SPECIFICATIONS

• Part-time, non-exempt position; 4 to 5 days, includes weekends
• Hours: 4 hours each afternoon, moving with the daylight to ensure evening feedings and bedtime tuck-ins occur at sunset
• Criminal background check
• Work schedule varies; regular weekend and holiday availability required
• Some evening hours are required during the summer months
• Occasional travel may be required to assist with transport for animal rescues and vet appointments
• Salary: commensurate with experience

The chosen candidate must be flexible, open to learning, and interested in living in a kinder and more compassionate world for ALL, regardless of species. Animal observation and behavior awareness with solid communication skills will serve the successful candidate in this position. An ideal candidate is actively engaged or committed to collaborating on these efforts.

Stage 1: 1 hour video call with a member of our animal care crew

Stage 2: two or three day onsite working interview, this is a paid skill assessment.
