Job Summary: Primary duties and responsibilities focus on performing routine clinical laboratory testing to include pre-analytical, analytical, post-analytical and general activities to support patient care. Position functions as a generalist in chemistry, immunoassay, coagulation, hematology, blood bank, microbiology with associated molecular applications and urinalysis. Required Customer Service Skills: Employees of the Salem Clinic are required to consistently implement the Clinic’s “Principles of Customer Service” (described below).
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a biological, physical, chemical science, or Medical Laboratory Science/ Medical Technology.
- Certification as a medical laboratory scientist/medical technologist or equivalent; MLS (ASCP) or MT(ASCP) Certification.
- Skills and knowledge to support performing a full range of laboratory testing in a highly complex testing environment. .
- Ability to interpret quality control results and take corrective action as needed.
- Ability to accurately perform laboratory testing at a pace to support prescribed turnaround times.
- Ability to work independently; recognize problems and take action.
- Ability to actively communicate problems/ suggest resolution with co-workers and Director of Laboratory Services/ Vendor representative, etc.
- Ability to operate testing instrumentation, including use of the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Ability to work all shifts, regardless of the day of the week.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, staff, physicians, and the public.
- Assists with the management of supply and reagent inventory to support timely patient care.
Essential Functions:
- Perform analysis of blood, body fluids and miscellaneous clinical sample types in all licensed areas of the laboratory through manual testing and use of automated instrumentation. Requires extended periods of standing and/or sitting.
- Prepare reagents, calibrators, quality control material, stains, and other supplies as needed through application of standard laboratory technique. Requires good visual acuity, hand-eye coordination, ability to manually pipette liquids with high degree of accuracy and precision.
- Performs routine, scheduled instrument maintenance; able to troubleshoot and resolve instrument(s) malfunctions.
- Supports documentation and reporting of problems to allow for tracking, trending and corrective action as monitored by Laboratory Services Quality Assurance program.
- Reviews and reports laboratory results; manages abnormal and critical values in a manner to support timely patient care and compliance with state and federal laboratory regulations.
- Interpret patient results within defined parameters and manufacturer’s stated guidelines.
- Performs testing, record and report patient results via manual reports and/or Laboratory Information System through use of computer keyboard, monitor, and working knowledge of LIS software.
- Manages documentation, processing and tracking of referral testing and results; recognizes and adheres to state and federal reporting of designated laboratory ‘reportable results’.
- Able to provide technical guidance to laboratory assistants, nursing staff and providers in support of both pre-analytical and analytical testing processes.
- Ability to actively communicate with co-workers to coordinate testing needs to support timeliness, effectiveness and efficiencies. Ability to support completion of work in both a group setting as well independently.

- Participates in continuing education; provides evidence of required CE credits for ASCP registration/maintenance.
- Participates and supports department directed professional education discussions and presentations.
