Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Graduate of a Medical Assistant program with a nationally recognized certification such as AAMA, NCCT, or AMT.
- Current CPR certification.
- 1 year clinical experience or equivalent.
- Knowledge of medical practice and care to assist in providing patient care.
- Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
- Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
- Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments and medications as directed.
- Proficient in taking vital signs.
- Thorough skill in medical record documentation and recording test results.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.
- Ability to maintain quality control standards. (Rights of Medication administration, specimen labeling, etc)
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergent situations.
- Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines, protocols, and procedures.
- Ability to communicate clearly. Ask clarifying questions as necessary.
- Ability to read, understand, and respond to detailed oral and written instructions.
- Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing assignments and work pace.
- Ability to recognize workflow problems and share ideas for solutions.
- Good judgment and decision making skills. Alert provider of concerning patient conditions.
- Ability to utilize computer programs expected for patient care and the ability to type at least 30 wpm.
- Must be a team player, have a positive attitude, and be detail oriented.
- Attend morning huddle with practice provider to create plan for each day.
- Maintain a professional relationship with the provider you assist.
- Have a thorough understanding of provider preferences and ensure support staff is aware of provider preferences.
- Take responsibility for the day-to-day flow of the provider’s practice:
- Plan ahead by looking at up-coming scheduled appointments.
- Communicate with Care Team Assistant (CTA) and assist with scrubbing charts.
- Ensure that all in-basket messages are addressed within a timely manner. (Urgent messages ASAP but no longer than 24 hrs. All other messages within 48 hrs).
- Set-up for and assist provider with all procedures.
- Communicate clearly with team and support staff of practice needs. Delegate PRN.
- Prepare patients for examination and treatment. Record pertinent patient information.
- Prepare exam and treatment rooms with necessary supplies, equipment, and instruments.
- Perform selected patient care and clerical duties.
- Administer medications, injections as directed by medical provider.
- Assist medical provider with examinations, minor procedures, and treatments.
- Provide patient education for non complex needs or assist patient in goal selection with aid of educational materials.
- Provide After Visit Summary to patient and instruct patient on any follow up appointments or testing needed.
- Assist in scheduling of tests and treatment referrals.
- Respond to telephone calls / messages and respond accordingly or gather information and transfer to medical provider.
- Assist provider with management of patient forms (e.g. FMLA, sport physicals etc.).
- Adhere to safe principles of lifting, patient transfer and ergonomics.
- Step in as medical chaperone upon provider request.
- Assist with precepting new hires and student externships.
- Be a resource for staff on probation for medication errors.
- Assist Team Leader and Nurse Educator with checking off new staff on competencies not completed in classroom setting
- Assist Team leader and nurse Educator with annual competency check off of all staff.
- Be a resource on vaccine schedule and accessing/updating Alert – should be a vaccine expert
- Resource/go-to for day-to-day Epic issues on the floor.
- First level problem solving resource, then to Team Leader.
- Assist Team Leader and Nurse Educator with the implementation of new Epic workflows.
- Participate in our safety program by following all policies, procedures, and safety guidelines as outlined by our safety officer.
