Immediate supervisor: Operations Manager

Location: FOF Adoption Center

Hourly wage: $15.25/hr (starting wage)

Hours: Full time (40 hr/wk)

Overview

Working under the supervision of the Shelter Operations Manager, the Intake Specialist will perform a variety of medical, cleaning and clerical duties. The employee will be required to follow specific direction and adhere to the policies and procedures in the employee manual. Friends of Felines (FOF) employees should always represent our organization with professionalism and provide excellent customer service to visitors, adopters and clients. This position is also cross-trained to assist with surgical procedures in the event the surgery team is short-staffed or hosting a high-volume event.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for overseeing and answering questions from AM/PM cat care volunteers.
  • Deescalate any conflicts that may arise regarding the public visitors and elevate concerns to the Shelter Operations Manager if not possible.
  • AM/PM medical care consists of administering oral, injectable, or transdermal medications to shelter cats. Must be able to carefully and accurately follow written instructions and protocols.
  • AM/PM cat care consists of a variety of janitorial duties including, but not limited to the following; disinfecting enclosures and free-roaming rooms, sanitizing litter boxes, feeding, dishwashing, sweeping, mopping and laundry. Volunteers assist with cleaning when available, cleanliness of the adoption center is the responsibility of every employee.
  • Perform the daily medical appointments for shelter and foster animals. Appointments include basic medical procedures on FOF cats and kittens* such as blood draws, vaccinations, oral medication administration and physical examinations. *Training will be provided.
  • Answer phone calls/emails and schedule appointments for the foster animals.
  • Perform adoption counseling* and answer questions from visitors looking to adopt.
  • Process adoptions in our shelter database, Shelterluv. *Training will be provided.
  • Medical record keeping and data entry with attention to detail.
  • Protect the confidentiality of all clients, visitors, and donors.
  • Always promote FOF and our mission in a positive and professional manner.
  • Maintain a clean and professional appearance while representing FOF.

Education & Work Experience Requirements

  • Required: Must be a high school graduate, or equivalent and 18 years of age.
  • Optional: Associates degree (or equivalent military experience) in any animal or biological science field.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have completed or are currently enrolled in an AAHA-Accredited Veterinary Assisting or Technology Program.

Skills & Physical Requirements

Skills:

  • Impeccable customer service in person, on the phone and through email communications.
  • Close attention to detail while able to multitask.
  • Capable of maintaining a high level of professionalism and calm demeanor in stressful situations.
  • Fluent in speaking and writing in English. Bilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Confident around cats of all behavior types. *Behavior and Fear Free handling training will be provided.
  • Competent in Word, Excel, Internet searches and basic data entry in the shelter database

Physical & Workplace Standards:

  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs., bend, stoop and stand for periods up to 3 hours at a time.
  • Must be consistently punctual in attendance as described in the employee manual.
  • Must be able to be around and have physical contact with cats of all ages, breeds, coat lengths without endangering your health in any way (allergic, immunocompromised, hemophilia, etc.)
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from scheduled shifts, with occasional transport of shelter animals to another veterinary facility.
  • Friends of Felines is a drug and alcohol-free workplace and drug screening may apply for those in a supervisory capacity.
