Your Role With Us:
- Abstracts and codes clinical data from medical records in compliance with regulatory programs using program data dictionaries such as ICD-9 CM, ICD-10, ICD-0, STORE, AJCC, and SEER.
- Maintains an abstracting volume to meet reporting deadlines of Salem Hospital and governing agencies; Assists with Cancer Committee, annual reports, and publications, and other requirements of ACoS standards for a Comprehensive Community Cancer Center.
- Maintains ongoing knowledge base regarding changes in abstracting and accreditation standards as it pertains to the Cancer Registry; Performs case finding and evaluates exclusion and inclusion criteria for case submissions on at least a quarterly basis.
- Assists the registry supervisor, SCI manager or director with coordinating, developing, maintaining, and organizing the Cancer Registry and is involved in process improvement; Assists with staff training and maintenance of policies and procedures; Assists with providing input and leadership with meeting and maintaining the requirements for ACoS.
- Acts as a content resource for the supervisor, co-workers, physicians and other departments or individuals by demonstrating a working knowledge and understanding of all tasks performed by cancer registry staff assisting with ensuring compliance standards are consistently met; Supports systems working with other hospital departments & clinics to retrieve and review clinical data for abstracting.
- Coordinates, obtains and verifies clinical information and data to support clinical quality performance measurement and improvement throughout Salem Hospital and as required by Federal, State and other regulatory agencies.
- Assists in coordinating related program activities, meetings and conferences as necessary for accreditation, performance improvement and service line support; Serves as a representative of the cancer registry when collaborating with physicians, clinicians, Cancer Service Line staff and other customers.
- Attends assigned meetings; Maintains cancer registry database; Attends seminars, workshops, and continuing education as assigned.

Background/Expertise:
- Associates Degree required.
- Certified Oncology Data Specialist, ODS-C (formerly CTR) accredited by the National Cancer Registry Association (NCRA) required; Registered Health Info Technician or Registered Health Info Administrator preferred.
- Minimum of five (5) years registry experience required; ACoS survey coordination and preparation experience required.
- Detail oriented and advanced computer skills required. Mid-level to advanced knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology and understanding of disease processes and coding.
- Data entry on network computer system, proficiency in database usage as to be able to abstract data directly into computerized database system and ability to compile data for reporting.
- Ability to use other office equipment as necessary to accomplish daily work; Must have excellent interpersonal skills to interact with patients and physicians.
