Position: Full Time Medical Assistant/Phlebotomist
Department: Columbiana Primary Care
Shift: Day Shift, Varying Times:
Monday, Tuesday: Columbiana 7a-3:30p
Wednesday, Thursday: Lisbon 7a-3:30p
Friday: Salem Primary Care 8a-4:30p
PURPOSE
The primary purpose of a Phlebotomist/ Medical Assistant is to perform assigned duties in an efficient manner, in accordance with the established procedures, and as directed by the Office Manager and/or licensed physician(s) to assure that a successful viable office is maintained at all times. This position will predominantly focus on phlebotomy, with additional medical assistant duties, to support multiple office locations. Key responsibilities include:
- Performing laboratory and clinical tests, ensuring accuracy and proper handling of specimens.
- Drawing blood samples for diagnostic purposes.
- Performing selected nursing, administrative, and clerical duties to support patient care management.
- Assisting with minor patient triage and administering first aid when necessary.
- Assisting physicians during patient consultations and medical procedures in the office setting.
The Medical Assistant/Phlebotomist must ensure all tasks are completed in a professional, efficient, and accurate manner to contribute to the overall success and viability of the office.
Must care for a patient population that includes infants, adolescents and geriatrics, therefore, must be able to identify the special needs of each patient according to age and respond appropriately. Attached is an outline of the major duties and responsibilities you will be required to perform and the standards you are expected to meet in performing those duties and responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Educational/Professional Requirements
Educational Requirements/training:
High school diploma required. Technical or Vocational training as a Clinical Medical Assistant and Phlebotomy required. Certification preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of one year experience preferred. Experience performing prior authorizations.
Job Skills:
Requires reading and understanding of moderately complex or detailed documents containing some unusual words and phrases. Requires arithmetic ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers. Requires Clinical skills related to patient intake, injections, phlebotomy, clia testing and other clinical medical assistant duties. Some typing or word processing is required, general forms and/or internal memos or short letters. Requires computer skills for basic data entry and retrieval. Experience using and documenting in Electronic Health Records (EHR), or Electronic Medical Records (EMR). Ten finger keyboard typing skills are required. Experience performing prior authorizations preferred. BLS certification preferred but not required.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Draws blood samples from children, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients, using proper phlebotomy technique. Maintains a neat and well-stocked phlebotomy tray at all times. Correctly follows the “2 patient identifier” rule. Assures that all specimens are drawn exactly as ordered on the draw list. Calls up draw lists and pending logs as directed by lab policy. Understands and abides by all Hospital and department safety procedures and infection control guidelines; knows location and use of SDS material, and location and use of emergency equipment. Assists in maintaining phlebotomy supply inventory. Performs bleeding times. Administers post-phlebotomy care to all patients.
Performs waived laboratory tests, including venipuncture with accompanying paper work, strep screens, immunizations, urinalysis, pregnancy and other tests. Triages patients, noting subjective symptoms and observations of patient’s presentation. Measures and records vital signs. Administers first aid. Documents pertinent patient information in electronic medical record. Assists physician with various procedures. Applied dressings under physician’s direction, removes sutures, applies steri-strips. Administers immunizations and assists physician with medication management. Assists in emergency as directed by physician. Summons ambulance and paramedics as directed by physician. Prepares discharge instructions and reviews with patient.
This position will also be responsible for checking in and out patients, scheduling appointments, performing daily appointment reminder calls, and updating all demographic and insurance information.
