District Maintenance/Grounds Support Technician

POSITION CHARACTERISTICS To maintain the school grounds in a condition of excellence so full use of the areas may be made at all times.To assist the district's maintenance supervisor with district wide maintenance and preventive maintenance (PM) tasks. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Assist Maintenance Supervisor in district maintenance and PM tasks. Assist groundskeeper in maintaining grounds and equipment. Assist school custodians in school event setups and breakdowns. Plow assigned elementary school(s). Install snow stakes and place sand barrels. Maintain sand and ice melt stock at elementary schools. Care for school grounds, including athletiic areas as directed.. Prepare for seeding by proper cultivation of soil and adding fertilizer and or chemicals as needed. Plant seeds, bulbs, tree seedlings, and shrubs as directed so the resulting growth will produce an attractive appearance. Prune trees, and trim shrubs to promote growth and improve appearance. Mow and trim lawns, using a variety of hand or power equipment. Inspect flowers, shrubs and trees for evidence of insects, fungi, and other pests and spray or dust chemicals to infected areas as directed. Shovel snow or operate equipment to remove snow from sidewalks and driveways, and spread sand to prevent slipping. Collect and dispose of refuse as necessary. Repair and maintain equipment in assigned custodial duties. Assist the district courier in circumstances when additional help is needed, or when driver is absent. Assist the district groundskeeper with high school game field prep. Prep and maintain ballfields at six elementary schools and the middle school. Make minor repairs to district pavement, fences, etc. Provide coverage for district boiler/maintenance and supervisor, high school maintenance tech, groundskeeper, and district courier. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS Any combination of education and experience that would provide the knowledge and skills listed. A valid State of New Hampshire drivers license with no restrictions. This position is subject to 180 day probationary period. Knowledge of: Methods, chemicals, and equipment used in caring of grounds, flowers. trees and shrubs. Equipment, materials and supplies used in grounds maintenance. Ability to: Read and understand signs, labels and work schedules. Write and enter information on records. Operate machines and other tools and equipment properly, safely, and efficiently. Communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors, staff and visitors. Work independently as well as in a team atmosphere and to complete daily activities according to work schedule. Understand and follow written and oral instructions. Background Check Candidates will need to successfully pass a background investigation to include fingerprint and criminal history evaluation. Duties require frequent lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifting and /or moving more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Working Conditions While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic chemicals. Employees are required to work on weekends as needed. Must be available to work night, weekend and holiday shifts. On night, weekend or holiday shifts as assigned, may be required to work alone. On such assignments, within established policies and procedures, incumbents of this position are expected to work with considerable initiative and independent judgment in identifying and taking corrective action on the more routine problems. Emergency complex problems occurring during such assignments are referred to appropriate higher level personnel. Employees may need to travel to alternate work locations.
