POSITION SUMMARY: On Campus Adjuncts in Various Curriculums – Salem, WV
The adjunct professor role at Salem University entails teaching on-ground courses across multiple disciplines, including Education, Biology, Chemistry, English, Math, Science, Criminal Justice, Computer Science, Business, Nursing, and Information Technology. These multifaceted part-time positions are crucial for delivering interactive and accessible education in classrooms and through the Blackboard platform, aiding students by connecting them to academic resources such as writing help and fostering a nurturing and responsible educational environment. Please note: This position is a part-time faculty role that involves both on-ground course delivery and using Blackboard.
2.0 PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Deliver engaging and dynamic instruction in various academic subjects.
- Maintain effective communication with students regarding their academic progress and provide consistent updates.
- Meet all faculty obligations for course management and facilitation each month.
- Actively participate in departmental meetings and collaborate with fellow faculty members to realize educational objectives and departmental goals.
3.0 POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Applicants must exhibit integrity, possess strong analytical abilities to interpret data, inspire collective achievement of goals, and sustain effective relationships with a diverse array of internal and external stakeholders.
- A Doctorate is preferred but not required.
- A minimum of three to five years of relevant teaching experience is necessary.
- Exceptional communication skills (written, oral, and interpersonal) are crucial, in addition to competencies in collaboration, strategic planning, time management, problem-solving, and leadership that promote an open, team-oriented, and innovative approach.
4.0 ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
- This position directly reports to the Program Director within the respective academic department.
5.0 ENVIRONMENT:
- The university's environment is highly dynamic, geared towards high performance, and adept at multitasking within a digital and physical classroom setting.
FACULTY EXPECTATIONS:
- Ensure prompt submission of required documents such as independent study agreements, class rosters, syllabi, and grades to the designated university official by the specified deadlines.
- Proactively initiate contact with students to welcome them and address any initial queries.
- Consistently update and distribute the course syllabus while ensuring that instructor information is current, including contact details and office hours.
- Provide scheduled office hours for student consultations, accommodating multiple courses as needed.
- Engage actively in class discussions, interacting with students and participating directly at least three days a week.
- Regularly access course platforms, respond to student inquiries within 24 hours, and provide prompt, detailed feedback on assignments using an established rubric.
- Maintain an accurate and current gradebook, clearly communicate grading policies in the syllabus, and ensure transparency about students’ academic standings.
- Encourage students to participate in the End-of-Course Survey to provide feedback on the effectiveness of the course design, university services, and teaching methods.
- Remind students of important dates for forthcoming courses to promote early and sustained attendance.
- Adhere to stringent deadlines for grade submission and maintain open communication with the Registrar’s Office regarding any potential delays.
- Utilize Blackboard's electronic Weekly Student Alerts feature to monitor and report on student performance, particularly identifying and providing support for at-risk students.
