What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Accountant position at Salem University?
GENERAL SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for assisting with day-to-day accounting tasks like data entry, preparing journal entries, reconciling bank statements, supporting accounts payable, payroll, and receivable processes, helping with month-end and year-end closing procedures, maintaining accurate financial records, and ensuring compliance with accounting. This position will work closely with the VP of Finance for training and succession planning for future growth within the organization.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES (but not limited to):
- Data entry: Recording financial transactions into the general ledger system
- Journal entry preparation: Creating and posting journal entries for various transactions
- Bank statement reconciliation: Matching bank transactions to accounting records and resolving discrepancies
- Accounts payable/Payroll/receivable support: Support in ledger account assignment and corrections for AP processing, payroll journal entries to correct departments and payment collections reconciliation. Work closely with AP/PR Specialist
- Month-end and year-end closing: Performing necessary tasks to finalize financial records at the end of each accounting period
- Financial statement preparation: Assisting in the preparation of monthly financial reports
- Audit assistance: Gathering documentation and supporting senior staff during internal and external audits
- Fixed asset tracking: Maintaining records of company assets and depreciation schedules
- Compliance checks: Ensuring adherence to accounting standards and company policies
- Other: All other job-related duties as assigned by the VP of Finance
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
- Proficiency in Excell and ability to learn sector-specific ERP system(s)
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Good organizational skills
- Basic understanding of accounting principles
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Reports to: Vice President of Finance

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Required Education: A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance is required.
- Location: Hybrid – Northeast Indianapolis, IN for in-office days
- Job Type: Full Time, Monday-Friday
- Salary Range: $50,000 - $60,000 annual
Minimum Hire Rate:
Compensation is commensurate with the qualifications of the individual selected and budgetary guidelines of the hiring department, as well as the institutional pay plan.
