Overview
Under the supervision of the Aquatic Director, the Lifeguard works alongside members and guests, developing and monitoring the aquatic department and its programs to help ensure the safety, cleanliness, and general operations of the pools.

Responsibilities
- Function as a Lifeguard in maintaining order, preventing accidents, rescuing swimmers in danger of drowning, and enforcing pool rules
- Remain calm in challenging situations and make good sound judgments, establish goals, strive for excellence, build rapport and relate well to others
- React quickly and calmly in emergencies and know emergency procedures
- Apply lifeguarding techniques and render first aid when needed
- Direct the correction of improper lifeguard practices and behaviors
- Maintain effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and employees
- Maintain current certification and complete skill checks and polishes as required
- Know, understand, and consistently apply safety rules, policies and guidelines for the aquatic area
- Perform equipment checks as needed
- Perform chemical testing and make corrections as needed and as trained
- Attend staff meetings and participate in regular in-service training sessions
- Follow and enforce all pool rules
- Assist with cleaning and maintenance as needed
- Assist in coordination of special events and activities
- Endure all checklists, reports, and paperwork are completed correctly and in a timely manner
- Provide exceptional customer service by greeting all participants, maintaining a clean and safe facility and demonstrating professional conduct at all times
- All other duties as requested
Qualifications
- Must be at least 15 years of age
- Able to apply swimming, water safety, and rescue skills
- Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
- Strong communication and judgement skills
- Certifications or equivalent training in the following: American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/FA/AED, American Red Cross Waterpark Skills
- Must regularly lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds, and occasionally move up to seventy-five (75) pounds in the form of supplies or equipment
- Able to sit, stand and bend to perform appropriate tasks
- Must be able to move at an appropriate pace to respond to emergencies
- Follow all safety requirements of the Salina Family YMCA
- May be required to stand for extended periods of time
- Work in different temperature environments
