Overview
Under the direction of the SACC Coordinator, the Camp Counselor is responsible for working with youth in a wide variety of summer activities that strengthen youth imaginations and stretch their mind, body, and spirit. A successful camp counselor will be enthusiastic and want to spend the summer working with children in an indoor and outdoor camp setting. They must be an advocate for the YMCA Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Responsibility, and Respect.
Shifts are morning and afternoon and program operates from 7am to 6pm.
Responsibilities
• Organize and lead various small and large group camp activities each week, both independently and with a staff team. Activities may include crafts, nature, songs, games, nature walks, and swimming.• Able to follow detailed instructions on documenting child names on attendance sheets.• Able to supervise children at all times and follow all required camp policies and procedures.• Assist Lead Counselor with the upcoming weekly activity plans for your groups.• Follow all Camp schedules as required by the SACC Coordinator.• Communicate with other counselors, coordinators, and other YMCA staff frequently and appropriately.• Check for safety of materials, equipment, and facilities as required.• Provide exceptional customer service by greeting all participants, maintaining a clean and safe facility, and always demonstrating professional conduct.• Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner.• All other duties as requested.
Qualifications
• Must be at least 16 years of age
• Must be Lead Qualified (must have experience working with kids or have a college degree). • Able to work summer months and attend required training• Prioritize the needs and safety of children above all• Arrive at work and be at the designated work areas by assigned time• Follow all safety requirements of the Salina Family YMCA and Kansas Department of Health and Environment• Reliable, organized, energetic, and an outgoing self-starter with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment• Must have a positive attitude, be able to build relationships with people in a friendly and consistent manner, and support and portray the YMCA Character Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility• Must have a working knowledge of elementary school-aged children and their developmental stages and must assist in planning activities according to their capabilities and interests• Ability to work in a team setting, values education, and have a working knowledge of leisure time activities in the areas of recreational youth sports, arts, and crafts• Must be able to relate to children and parents and must stay within the YMCA safety guidelines and regulations• Ability to lead, plan, organize and implement program activities.• Ability to work with a diverse community.• Participates with children in opportunities to use their mind, body, spirit, both indoors and outdoors, with consideration for each child’s physical and developmental capabilities• Build personal and meaningful relationships with participants, volunteers, parents and others and fulfill the Y’s mission.• Actively supervises groups of children and maintains appropriate child to staff ratios.• Must be able to read and interpret complex documents.• Must possess highly effective oral and written communication skills and be able to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries and complaints.• Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.• Strong communication and judgment skills.• Able to make sound judgments and decisions, even when distracted by noise or activity.• Certifications: CPR/FA, within 30 days of hire
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS• Must regularly lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds, occasionally up to seventy-five (75) pounds in the form of supplies or equipment.• Able to sit, stand, and bend to perform appropriate tasks.• Perform all physical aspects of the position, including working with youth to interact with children at floor level, physical education activities such as running, jumping, etc., and equipment, and participating in outdoor activities.• Be self-directed, motivated, and creative.• Be a strong role model for participants and peers.• Able to move at an appropriate pace to respond to emergencies.• Work in different temperature environments.
