The Salinas Community Science Workshop (SCSW) is a hands-on, inquiry-based learning space dedicated to fostering curiosity, creativity, and scientific exploration among youth in Salinas. We provide engaging science experiences through our workshop, school partnerships, and our mobile Science on Wheels program.
Position Overview
The Program Director will oversee and manage the operations, programming, and outreach efforts of the Salinas Community Science Workshop. This role requires a strong background in science education, leadership skills, and the ability to drive our Science on Wheels bus (requiring a valid Class B Driver’s License or willingness to obtain one). The Program Director will be responsible for program development, staff management, working with Monterey County schools to develop programming, and leading efforts to expand educational outreach and engagement.
Key Responsibilities
Program Development & Management
- Design and implement interactive science programs and activities for students.
- Oversee daily operations at the workshop and Science on Wheels outreach.
- Develop curriculum that aligns with educational standards and community needs.
- Collaborate with Monterey County schools to create and enhance science programming.
Leadership & Staff Supervision
- Supervise, mentor, and support staff, interns, and volunteers.
- Conduct staff training and ensure a safe and engaging learning environment.
- Foster a collaborative and innovative team culture.
Operations & Logistics
- Manage program budgets, inventory, and equipment maintenance.
- Ensure the Science on Wheels bus is maintained and operational for school and community visits.
- Adhere to safety regulations and ensure all program activities meet risk management guidelines.
Qualifications
- Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Science, Education, or a related field.
- Experience in science education, program management, or community outreach.
- Leadership experience, with strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work with diverse youth populations and foster an inclusive learning environment.
- Valid Class B Driver’s License or willingness to obtain one.
Preferred:
- Bilingual in Spanish and English.
- Experience in fundraising, grant writing, or donor relations.
- Hands-on experience with workshop tools, engineering, or environmental science projects.
Compensation & Benefits

- Salary Range: $70,000- $75,000 Competitive, based on experience.
