Description:
The Sally J. Pimentel Deaf & Hard of Hearing Center (DHHC) is seeking a skilled and dedicated American Sign Language (ASL) Teacher to join our team as an independent contractor. This position will support our growing ASL program, teaching 3-4 evenings per week. The ideal candidate will have fluency and mastery of ASL, a deep understanding of Deaf culture, and a passion for teaching. Curriculum and lesson plans are provided, allowing the teacher to focus on delivering quality instruction.
Core Responsibilities:
- Teach ASL classes to adult and youth learners, utilizing the provided curriculum and lesson plans.
- Provide a supportive and inclusive learning environment that respects and promotes Deaf culture.
- Adapt instructional techniques to meet the needs of diverse students with varying ASL proficiency.
- Provide constructive feedback to students on their progress.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and staff to ensure classes align with program goals.
Further Responsibilities:
- Maintain classroom materials and resources provided for the course.
- Communicate with students regarding class schedules, assignments, and progress.
- Participate in program evaluations to help improve course offerings and delivery.
Ideal Candidate Profile:
- Must be fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) with a deep understanding of Deaf culture.
- Prior experience teaching ASL is preferred.
- Should possess excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Must be reliable, adaptable, and able to engage with students from diverse backgrounds.
- We strongly encourage Deaf individuals, CODAs, or those with strong connections to Deaf culture to apply.
Work Experience/Education/Training:
- Mastery of ASL and familiarity with Deaf culture is required.
- High school diploma or equivalent is required; advanced education in ASL or related fields is a plus.
