JOB SUMMARY
The MWR Fitness Center Supervisor is responsible for maintaining the MWR Fitness Center and overseeing programs which are designed to provide maximum opportunities for participation in a comprehensive program of fitness, and wellness activities that promote quality of life for all base personnel. Serves as the fitness program point of contact for all fitness related issues and concerns and is an expert in the field of physical fitness. The ideal candidate is a motivated individual who desires to work for a forward-thinking organization with a customer-service focused management style, creative programming skills, proven ability to lead a successful team/organization, and experience coordinating a fitness program.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Organize, schedule, implement, promote, and evaluate such program on a continuous basis.
- Develop and coordinates fitness related special events by establishing timetables, methods, and procedures to ensure maximum availability and participation.
- Responsible for the management of the fitness center, determining the adequacy of the facility and programs, and identifying additional facility and program needs.
- Applies knowledge of MWR in developing programs to improve the health and wellness of the customer.
- Responsible for all aspects of operating a MWR center 24 hours a day.
- Submit work orders to repair equipment or facilities and purchase requests to replace equipment.
- Recommends improvement or procurement of MWR equipment ranging from weight sets and machines to recreation games and audiovisual equipment, etc.
- Coach and mentor junior associates on handling simple to complex customer complaints or inquires to avoid recurring issues.
- Train and coach staff on a continuous basis for improvement.
- Reviews summaries of employee and patron compliance with established policies and procedures, investigates violation of rules, prepares options to solve problem, and presents recommended solution(s) to management for approval.
- Provides technical guidance and instruction to groups as well as individual participants interested in fitness and wellness activities for which the instructor has technical expertise (exercising in cold weather, exercise in extremely hot weather, exercise safety, nutrition, cross-training, strength training, sport-specific training, etc.).
- Assures that fire, safety, sanitation, and maintenance inspections are completed as required.
- Generates necessary communication service order requests (SORs) to departments responsible for these areas.
- Follows up with departments until all deficiencies have been completed.
- Manage and supervise all fitness instructor/trainers, recreation assistants responsible for fitness facility operation, and volunteers.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Five years of general experience in which candidate has demonstrated a knowledge of goals, principles, methods and techniques of recreation, food and beverage or business management, and understand the interests and motivations of individuals and groups equivalent where candidate may have gained by education.
- One year or more experience in military or similar contracting in remote environment.
- Experience in special event programming and planning community-wide events.
- Previous experience in fitness center management or experience as a personal trainer for military.
- Previous sports officiating experience or certifications in the field of fitness.
- Previous training in the MWR Supervisor Course is desirable.
- Experience working with or supervising multi-cultural employees.
- Experience in conducting sport and fitness events, runs, biathlons, swimming events, flag football, etc.
- Have current CPR and first aid training certificates and be Automated External Defibrillator (AED) trained.
- Must be capable of effectively communicating technical information in English, both written and verbal and have a customer service background.
- Must be willing and able to perform regular job requirements in this austere and dangerous working and living conditions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK CONDITIONS
- Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including but not limited to lifting 50 lbs. alone, and moving of items, parts, assembles and equipment up to safety regulations maximum.
- Endure long periods of standing when overseeing programs.
- Requires repetitious bending, stooping, stretching, twisting and heavy lifting (over 50 pounds) and demonstration of physical fitness techniques.
- The ability to work in a fast-paced environment handling multiple tasks at any given time and rapidly adapting to changing priorities and schedules.
