Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:
- Lead maintenance department operations and performance to drive efficiency and reduce cost.
- Support and drive performance of direct reports; four maintenance supervisors and a maintenance planner.
- Actively support and promote maintenance partner development plans through training and further education opportunities.
- Support the Continuous Improvement initiatives of the company.
- Oversee maintenance technician apprenticeship program with Wisconsin DWD.
- Promote the use of the CMMS system to improve cost tracking, record retention, and to drive efficiency by building asset information, preventive work schedules, and facilitating maintenance work flow.
- Monitor and drive performance of the maintenance work order cycle to be sure maintenance work requests are being completed in a timely manner.
- Monitor and drive performance of preventive maintenance schedules.
- Control and manage maintenance spend in parts and labor.
- Facilitate and engage maintenance partners in larger maintenance or continuous improvement projects and support through completion.
- Provide backup assistance with mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic trouble shooting and maintenance repairs as needs dictate.
- Monitor the utility systems including boilers, ammonia, air compressors, and pump systems.
- Oversee the monitoring of the forklifts and lift batteries; maintain appropriate recordkeeping log.
- Review MOC forms for proper food safety documentation.
- Oversee the maintenance of stock room parts inventory, components, tools, supplies and other maintenance items.
- Arrange for and manage appropriate outside contractor support.
- Support the execution of engineering projects and provide input on new equipment.
- Partner with Safety to ensure all maintenance driven safety programs are adequate and being followed.
- Ensure department completion of all safety, food safety, and APSM compliance training.
- Ensure department personnel follow established equipment Lockout/Tagout procedures as required at all times.
- Demonstrate and enforce safe work practices and compliance with all established safety policies and procedures.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly manages the Maintenance Supervisors on all shifts and Maintenance Planner. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with established policies and applicable law, including hiring, training, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and coaching; and addressing and resolving problems.
Qualifications

Must be able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and with changing environmental conditions. Must be highly motivated, and be able to work independently. Must have strong trouble shooting skills and demonstrated ability to manage multiple complicated priorities/tasks. Certification in OSHA programs and practices preferred. Knowledge of all maintenance crafts and tools, procedures, basic principles of machine design and operation is required, with knowledge of mechanics, electricity, plumbing, pneumatics, controls, hydraulics, and lubricants essential. Previous experience developing and managing PM programs is strongly preferred. Must be self-motivated and a team player, with a personal commitment to integrity, honesty, trustworthiness, respect, quality and reliability.
Education and/or Experience
A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field is preferred, or a combination of experience and technical training such as completion of a craft apprenticeship program. A minimum of 10 years maintenance experience is required, preferably in a USDA-regulated food manufacturing environment. A minimum of 3 years previous management experience is required.
Communication Skills
Must possess excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Must be able to read and interpret schematics. Must have the ability to interface effectively and professionally with outside contractors.
Computer Skills
Must have strong computer proficiency with Word, Excel, Outlook and Internet. Previous experience with an CMMS or Mpulse software system. Previous experience in plant ERP systems for purchase order and inventory tracking is preferred. Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks 3-D solid modeling software systems for generating and/or editing schematics and mechanical drawings is also desired.
Mathematical Skills
Must have advanced math skills.
Reasoning Ability
Must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal or diagram form. Must possess strong troubleshooting skills and strong judgment & decision-making skills.
Physical Demands
Performing the duties of this job requires frequent standing for extended periods; must be able to walk; sit, climb, and talk or hear, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms, with repetitive motions of hands, arms and shoulders. Must regularly lift up to 50# and periodically lift and/or move up to 75 #. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and color vision.
Work Environment
The work environment described here is representative of those an encountered while performing the essential functions of this job. There is a wide variation of temperatures ranging from 35° F to 100° F in the various work areas. The work environment is wet and slippery most times. The noise level in the production work environment is usually loud. Maintenance partners are required to wear frocks, EH- rated composite toed slip-resistant footwear, hearing protection, and hairnets at all times on the production floor. Gloves, goggles, and face shield may be required at different times in the course of the work being performed.
