Job Overview:
We are seeking a reliable and responsible Ditch Rider to join a small canal company based in Hollister, Idaho. During irrigation season, ditch riders make their own schedules but are required to work 7 days per week. In the off season employees work on canal maintenance, vehicle maintenance, concrete work and various other projects to keep the canal system running efficiently. Job hours in the off season are 7 am-3:30 pm, Monday-Friday. Full time employees are paid two weeks of vacation per calendar year, and eight hours of sick leave per month. An additional week of paid vacation is offered at the end of irrigation season and a week during Christmas. Salmon River Canal Company offers full time employees health insurance, PERSI, housing allowance and a cell phone reimbursement. Ditch Riders are given additional pay during the irrigation season. Experience is not required, but extra consideration and compensation will be given to those with experience and/or a CDL license. A valid drivers license is required. The position can be made a seasonal only position for the right applicant.

Responsibilities:

Irrigation Season--

  • Regulate, control and deliver project water in irrigation canals and laterals.
  • Schedule daily water deliveries as indicated on water delivery cards.
  • Maintain daily water records on computer and calculate water flow requirements.
  • Ability to properly calculate and measure water through head gates.
  • Communicate with landowners regarding water orders, misuse of water or other issues.
  • Report illegal use of water by pumps, haulers or landowners with or without water rights.
  • Monitor diversion structures, waste ways and head gates daily.
  • Check entire length of canals and laterals daily for obstructions, debris, leaks or breaks.
  • Monitor remote monitoring devices on head ends and tail ends of laterals.
  • Implement weed control program for canal right of way and aquatic weeds as necessary.
  • Report erosion or damage to any canals, laterals or structures and plan appropriate work.
  • Employee may be required to work additional hours depending on weather conditions.
  • Maintain delivery records and submit required reports to the management when required.
  • Employee is required to provide their own ditch riding vehicle, in good operating condition, and is compensated by the federal mileage rate.

Non Irrigation Season

  • Winterize system equipment and shop equipment and facilities.
  • Canal Maintenance on all canals, laterals and turnouts.
  • Report and replace damaged concrete and other structures.
  • Make repairs to equipment and project structures.
  • Spring burning and clearing of all laterals in your ride.

Irrigation and Non Irrigation Seasons

  • Clean and maintain canals and right of ways.
  • Remove trees, vegetation and weeds from right of ways.
  • Report condition issues with the system or equipment that needs repairs.
  • Maintain and repair equipment and facilities (emergency and non-emergency repairs).
  • Employee is responsible for having his/her ditch riding vehicle serviced and maintained.
  • Check and report any pollution in canals.
  • Develop safety improvements to system.
  • Perform manual tasks using hand and power tools.
  • Operate machinery such as a backhoe, loader, and excavator as needed and/or capable of.
  • Employee is responsible for safe working habits and safe equipment operating procedures.
  • Communicate with office staff and manager.
  • Employee is responsible for all work as assigned
