Job Description:
As an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Coordinator at the Salt Lake City Mayor’s office you would be responsible for assisting constituents with any ADA related issues or requests and ensuring the City complies with Title II of the ADA, which protects qualified individuals with disabilities. The ADA Coordinator is also responsible for responding to individual or community concerns and inquires by researching and analyzing problems and policy issues and developing solutions. This is a professional position requiring excellent communication skills, knowledge of ADA requirements, the exercise of independent judgement, and discretion in handling confidential information.This is an appointed, at-will position without tenure and is exempt from the career service system.
Position Salary Range:
$72,975 to $85,138, depending on experience and education

TYPICAL DUTIES:
- Serves as the Mayor’s liaison on matters relating to accessibility and disability under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Prepares Mayor’s office correspondence related to the ADA or disability matters. Coordinates referrals and recommendations, monitors corrective actions, and tracks the status of ADA-related complaints and requests from the community. Researches and analyzes data and trends to make recommendations to the Mayor and City Council.
- Serves as the central point of contact for all City matters and accommodations relating to the ADA. Coordinates with agencies and regulatory groups such as the Department of Justice, the Utah Governor’s Council of People with Disabilities, Utah Transit Authority, and the Salt Lake County ADA Coordinator.
- Oversees and provides guidance to a team of liaisons, each representing the various City departments, charged with reviewing City policies, practices, programs, and other needs established by the ADA. Coordinates with appropriate departments to resolve Title VI (Civil Rights) complaints. Develops, coordinates, and/or provides training in ADA related subjects for internal and external groups as needed.
- Provides staff support to and coordinates the activities of the Salt Lake City Accessibility and Disability Commission (ADC), consisting of advocates, volunteers, community members, and disability organization professionals. Posts all required ADC meeting items, as established by the Open Public Meetings Act. Compiles ADC recommendations to inform senior leadership of feedback and recommendations.
- Coordinates ADA events and projects. Reviews and manages Accessible Events Applications. Attends meetings and coordinates with the Event Permits team to ensure all public events are fully accessible.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Business Management, Sociology or related subjects, and four years related experience. Education and experience may be substituted on a year for year basis.
- Strong public presentation skills. Proven track record in the establishment and maintenance of strong relationships with all levels of staff and management in public and private sectors.
- Ability to understand, interpret and effectively communicate requirements of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Ability to influence and assist other City departments to comply with related federal and state regulations.
- Familiarity with state or local government’s structure, activities, and employees.
- Knowledge of the ADA and other laws addressing the rights of people with disabilities, such as Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, 29 U.S.C. § 794.
- Experience with people with a broad range of disabilities.
- Knowledge of various alternative formats and assistive technologies that enable people with disabilities to communicate, participate, and perform tasks.
- Ability to work cooperatively with local government and people with disabilities.
- Familiarity with any local disability advocacy groups or other disability groups.
- Skills and training in negotiation and mediation.
- Organizational and analytical skills.
- Obtain ADA Coordinator Certification within 2 years of starting position.
- Ability to travel to/from assigned work locations.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Light physical activity, generally comfortable working conditions. Some exposure to heat, cold, dust, out of doors, etc.
- Position may require some evening and weekend work.
