JOB SUMMARY
The Building Code Inspector ensures that all district construction projects and renovations comply with local, state and federal building codes, fire safety standards, and accessibility requirements. This role serves as the district’s expert in code compliance, conducting inspections and providing guidance to ensure safety, functionality, and adherence to regulations. This role works closely with pre-construction managers, project managers, architects, engineers, contractors, and others to identify and address code compliance concerns throughout the district.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
All positions require selected candidates to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check. Additional minimum required qualifications for this position are:
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field
- Three (3) years of full-time, paid experience in building inspections, code compliance and enforcement, or closely related job duties
- Current certification as a Building Code Official or Inspector (e.g., ICC Certification)
- International Building Code (IBC), International Mechanical Code (IMC), International Plumbing Code (IPC), and fire sprinkler system certifications (or ability to obtain certifications within 1 year of employment)
- Experience interpreting architectural and engineering plans
- Experience using inspection tools and software for tracking compliance and generating reports
- Current Utah Driver’s License and evidence of insurability; regular travel to construction sites required
- Ability to operate standard office equipment, computer, phone, copy machine, scanner, etc.
- Speak, read, write, and present professionally, analyze, and interpret English written and verbal communications
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Experience in a K-12 education or public employment environment
- Four (4) or more years full-time, paid experience in building inspections, code compliance and enforcement, or closely related job duties
- Completion of OSHA 30-Hour Construction Training Course
- Strong technology proficiency with a demonstrated ability to quickly learn and adapt to new software, tools, and systems
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct regular inspections of new construction, renovations, and maintenance projects to ensure compliance with building codes, fire codes, and accessibility standards
- Review and interpret architectural and engineering plans to identify potential code violations and recommend necessary modifications
- Issue inspection reports detailing compliance status, deficiencies, and corrective actions required
- Serve as the district’s point of contact and liaison with local and state building officials to coordinate inspections and address code-related inquiries
- Maintain comprehensive and detailed records of all inspections, certifications, and code-related documentation
- Prepare and present detailed reports for district leadership, summarizing inspection findings, compliance issues, and recommended actions
- Track the progress of recommended actions and corrective measures to ensure timely resolution of both compliance-based and non-compliance-based issues
- Collaborate with architects, engineers, contractors, and others to review project plans for code compliance before construction begins
- Review and approve building plans and specifications, ensuring they align with district guidelines and regulatory standards
- Facilitate meetings to communicate code requirements and establish inspection schedules
- Develop and provide training to district staff, contractors, and project teams that clearly articulates code requirements, inspection findings, fire safety standards, and ADA compliance requirements
- Serve as a resource for schools and departments, offering guidance on code-related questions and issues
- Research and respond to changing regulations and stay current on updates to building codes, fire codes, and other related regulations, ensuring the district remains in compliance
- Coordinate with utility companies, city planning departments, state agencies, and other regulatory offices to secure necessary permits and approvals
- Serve as the district’s representative at meetings with contractors, architects, and regulatory agencies to address compliance issues
- Work closely with district staff, providing direction and oversight to ensure consistent application of codes and standards
- Serve as the district’s point of contact and liaison for architects, contractors, state/local agencies, utility companies, and other regulatory bodies to secure necessary permits and approvals and ensure effective communication and decision making
- Act as a Building Code Official, overseeing mechanical, plumbing, ADA, and fire safety compliance
- Serve as the district’s ADA representative and address accessibility compliance
- Respond to inquiries, manage conflicts and resolve issues that arise during the inspection process, maintaining a positive and proactive approach to problem-solving
- Work under limited supervision, use time-management and prioritization strategies, adapt to changing work priorities, and work with frequent interruptions to meet deadlines
- Manage a wide variety of work activities to ensure district compliance with city, county, state, and federal regulations
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships; support a team environment; collaborate with department and other work units (e.g. district personnel, area supervisors, community organizations, etc.) to perform the duties of the position effectively and implement and maintain services and programs
- Show initiative and resourcefulness (anticipate needs, leverage available resources and relationships, etc.) to gather and analyze information, identify, and resolve complex issues, and develop alternative approaches and ideas to improve the situation and provide strategic solutions
- Participate in meetings, workshops, and seminars, as assigned, to convey, and gather information required to perform job functions
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements
- As needed, roll, push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and lift up to 30 pounds
- Assist other personnel as may be required and perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective function of the work unit

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: some lifting up to 30 pounds, rolling, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing ladders, working at heights, distinguishing color-coded wires, accessing confined spaces, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 35% sitting, 30% walking, and 35% standing. This job is performed partially in a generally clean and healthy office environment, and partially in environments that involve exposure to construction sites with some temperature extremes and conditions with some exposure to the risk of injury and illness. This job also requires travel in vehicles to construction sites.
