JOB SUMMARY:
The Literacy Supervisor supports and assists the Language Arts Director to ensure that school personnel receive the necessary professional development and support to enhance literacy instruction across all schools. This position provides oversight and assists the district in meeting its literacy goals and maintaining high standards of instructional leadership.?
Currently, the SLCSD literacy goal is to have 70% of students in every grade reading at grade level. This is crucial to meeting the vision of the superintendent and the Board, as literacy is the foundation of academic success and lifelong learning. The District Literacy Supervisor is responsible for supporting schools in the implementation of district-wide literacy programs. This role involves working closely with school administrators, teachers, and other staff to enhance literacy instruction and student achievement. The Supervisor will also manage the LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) program, ensuring alignment with district goals and state standards.
The Supervisor reports directly to Director - Language Arts.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
All positions require selected candidates to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check. Additional minimum required qualifications for this position are:
- Master's degree in Education, literacy, reading or related field
- Professional Utah Administrative/Supervisory License, or an Administrative/Supervisory license from another state that is transferrable to Utah
- LETRS certification, literacy/reading endorsement, or related credential
- Five years of experience licensed literacy instruction, literacy coaching, or a related role, with a strong background in literacy instruction and program management.
- Intermediate experience and proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, etc.).
- Professional communication skills including, but not limited to: excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; confident, articulate, and professional speaking abilities; and empathic listening and persuasive speaking skills.
- Valid Utah Driver’s License, evidence of insurance and access to reliable transportation and ability to travel to different district locations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- Ability to provide positive and inspirational leadership/guidance and a collaborative mindset to learning community stakeholders
- Three or more years of licensed school administrative experience
- Three or more years’ experience working in Title I school(s)
- Have an ESL endorsement or will obtain one within 4 years of hire with the district
- Experience with LETRS or similar literacy-oriented programs
- Experience supervising and evaluating the conduct/performance of assigned personnel
- Two or more years’ experience implementing or monitoring state and or federal policies and regulations
- Ability to implement policies, procedures and/or processes for providing direction and/or complying with mandated requirements
- Knowledgeable of culturally competent strategies and culturally responsive, professional communication/engagement strategies with all members of the school community
- Knowledge of and leadership on behalf of effective English Language Learners teaching practices
- Knowledge of budget management in alignment with district needs, following district budget, procurement and accounting policies and procedures with integrity and ethics
- Experience with development/implementation of a school-wide behavior management plans
- Knowledge in student leadership development, deployment, and supervision of student activities with consideration of academic and social growth
- Ability to be flexible and adaptable with changing priorities and needs of the school, students, parents, district, and other stakeholders
- Speaks, reads, writes and understands Spanish
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist schools in implementing district literacy programs by providing guidance, resources, and professional development
- Collaborate with school administrators to develop and execute school-specific literacy plans that align with district goals
- Manage and oversee the district’s approved literacy program and curriculum (LETRS), ensuring that all participants receive high-quality training and support
- Effectively and diplomatically interact and work in cooperation with district staff at all levels, as well as outside entities; incorporate culturally competent strategies and utilize culturally responsive communication and engagement strategies with all members of the school community
- Support and assist the Language Arts Director in all matters pertaining to the Department
- Provide sound judgement and advice to constituent community; use excellent critical thinking, decision making and organizational skills
- Perform supervisory duties, including coaching, mentoring, evaluating, and providing feedback regarding performance and conduct of all assigned personnel to develop a culture of accountability and achievement
- Facilitate communication between personnel, administration, and/or the general public to evaluate solutions, solve problems, and/or resolve employee relations conflicts
- Participate in meetings (e.g., workshops, staff meetings, seminars, etc.) to convey and gather information required to perform essential functions
- Prepare written materials and reports as needed to document activities, convey information, and report on the progress and impact of literacy initiatives
- Monitor and assess the effectiveness of literacy programs, providing feedback and recommendations for improvement to the department and schools
- Plan, organize, and deliver professional development workshops and training sessions for teachers and administrators on best practices in literacy instruction
- Support the ongoing professional growth of educators by providing coaching, modeling, and resources to improve literacy instruction
- Incorporate and advise on innovative teaching methods and materials to enhance learning experiences for students
- Analyze literacy and student related data from assessments and other sources to identify trends, areas of need, and opportunities for improvement
- Collect and utilize data to inform decision-making and to tailor support to individual schools or student groups
- Consistently demonstrate excellent critical thinking, decision making and organizational skills
- Responsible for compliance with all requirements of the Utah Educational Leadership Standards
- Maintain professional workplace etiquette and represent the department/district in a professional manner; maintain confidentiality; observe FERPA and other student privacy laws
- Work with limited supervision; ability to work effectively under constant deadlines and time constraints; manage multiple tasks and responsibilities and prioritize accordingly.
