Job Summary

The Facilities Supervisor for the Grounds department at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) oversees and manages grounds and landscaping operations across multiple campus locations. This role requires a blend of leadership, horticultural knowledge, and practical skills to maintain the safety and beauty of the grounds year-round. Responsibilities include leading a team of Groundskeepers, planning and executing landscaping maintenance activities such as turf maintenance, mowing, trimming, weeding, aerating, mulching, and planting. The Supervisor also handles the application of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers, and manages various plants, bushes, tree care and irrigation.

Additionally, the Facilities Supervisor assists the Grounds Director and Manager with personnel decisions, operational oversight, and the development of landscape operations playbooks and SOPs. They contribute to capital planning for irrigation upgrades, equipment advancements, hardscape improvements, and landscaping modifications. The role involves moderate physical effort and must be available to work on call for snow removal and sprinkler system emergencies, working under various weather conditions, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

This position is considered an advanced groundskeeper or supervisory level role but also involves performing all duties of groundskeeper positions as needed. Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Supervisor oversight of employee work, make assignments, oversee equipment and safety, performance management, time sheet approval, oversight on Sprocket orders and work schedules.
  • Assist the Grounds Director with other duties as necessary.
  • Learn and train supporting staff with safety and job performance.
  • Maintain grounds to include watering grass, flowers, and shrubs, transplanting / planting sod, flowers, shrubs, and trees, weeding flower and shrub beds, litter removal, and general equipment maintenance.
  • Prune trees, shrubs and perennials, prepare annual beds, and apply fiber mulch to tree wells.
  • Perform weed control in accordance with Integrated Pest Management Strategies.
  • Remove dead or hazard trees and shrubs.
  • Remove snow and ice at SLCC campus locations. Areas include parking lots, sidewalks, handicap ramps, and roadways.
  • Apply ice melt in designated locations.
  • Operate and maintain equipment associated with snow removal job duties.
  • Perform sprinkler emergency repair work on a 24-hour, 365 days on call bases at SLCC campus locations.
  • Open, complete, and close out work orders in the Sprocket system.
  • Enter time worked and order materials.
  • Enter time for full time and part employees.
  • Complete all College required training courses and safety courses.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or high school diploma with some additional continuing education through certification program.
  • Zero (0) to three (3) years or more of direct, paid, full-time grounds maintenance experience, including managing multiple complex projects, designing landscaping and maintenance, irrigation systems, snow removal, and pesticide / herbicide application. At least two (2) years of experience in a supervisory or lead capacity.
  • Valid Utah driver’s license to operate some equipment.
  • Ability to obtain forklift certification within six (6) months of start date.
  • Herbicide and pesticide application licenses required within six (6) months.
  • Education may be substituted one-to-one with full-time work experience.Part time related work experience may be substituted for full-time experience on a prorated basis. Preferred Qualifications Master Gardner. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Job Proficiency :

  • Candidate must possess the capability to independently perform the required tasks, not solely relying on delegating responsibilities, as there may be months where they are the sole contributor. This is a working supervisor position.
  • Supervisory Skills :

  • Prior experience in supervising teams, including accurately planning and coordinating work schedules weekly. The candidate should be adept at working individually with team members, providing training, and ensuring a comprehensive understanding of job responsibilities.
  • Leads a team of approximately 1 – 20 team members, comprising one full-time and multiple part-time staff.
  • Computer Proficiency :

  • Proficiency in essential computer skills is mandatory. This includes entering and approving employee time, with the recognition that a lack of basic computer skills can lead to challenges, particularly in tasks like time entry and utilizing the Sprocket system (work orders).
  • Clear Communication :

  • Effective communication is crucial, both in written and verbal forms. The candidate needs to articulate instructions clearly to supporting staff.
  • Training Competence :

  • The role entails conducting various training sessions related to safety, chemical handling, equipment operation, and application procedures. The candidate must exhibit the ability to learn, perform, and effectively train others in these aspects.
  • Botanical Knowledge :

  • A fundamental understanding of plants, trees, and shrubs is essential, as the primary responsibility involves their care. Proficiency in working at heights, such as using ladders for tree maintenance, is a key aspect of the job.
  • Winter Responsibilities :

  • During winter, snow-related duties become prominent. The candidate should be prepared to respond promptly to early snow emergencies and spending extended hours in a vehicle and inclement weather.
  • Safety Awareness :

  • The ability to identify safety hazards and effectively manage them is a critical aspect of the role, ensuring a secure working environment for the team.
  • Physical Requirements :

  • Involves moderate physical effort for various gardening tasks, such as watering, transplanting, weeding, pruning, litter removal, and minimal equipment maintenance. Will need to lift objects weighing 50 lbs. or more. Ability to work from a ladder.
  • Maintenance Expertise :

  • Performs ground maintenance tasks, including turf maintenance, Xeriscape, pesticide and herbicide application, fertilizer use, and possesses knowledge of plants, trees, and irrigation.
  • Abilities :

  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.

    Salary : $39,686 - $41,000
