What are the responsibilities and job description for the Specialist III, Bruin Pantry position at Salt Lake Community College?
In alignment with community engagement values and to support student success, Thayne Center for Student Life, Leadership, & Community Engagement provides basic needs resources. Bruin Pantry Specialists support the Bruin Pantry network by assisting general operations. Through the Bruin Pantry, SLCC distributes a variety of foods and hygiene products to students, faculty, and staff at the college. Our team of staff, student leaders, and volunteers receives, processes, and distributes these goods efficiently and accessibly while clearly communicating pantry policies and other relevant information. Each Bruin Pantry Specialist supports an assigned pantry location, takes inventory of food stock, rescues or purchases food from local stores, consults with teammates regarding resource reallocation, and transports products across the pantry network. Success of this role is measured by well-stocked and distributed resources available to visitors during distribution hours.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
General Duties
- Must be able to work 29 hours per week.
- Obtain purchasing card and uphold responsibilities outlined in the cardholder agreement and purchasing card training.
- Uphold authorization responsibilities outlined by motor pool and SLCC’s Risk Management Department. Authorized driver’s must be over 21 and maintain a valid Utah Driver’s license. When possible, use provided departmental vehicles including Large Capacity Passenger Vehicle.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and make repetitive movements.
- This opening is primarily focused at the SLCC’sJordan and Herriman Bruin Pantry locations, but has weekly responsibilities at Taylorsville Redwood campus as well. This position requires driving to multiple campuses and may require starting the day at varying campus locations.
Pantry Oversight
- Ensure pantries follow Utah Food Bank and community partners operational standards. Report grocery rescue delivery to Utah Food Bank using their online reporting system.
- Assist in overseeing the daily operations of pantry locations.
- Take regular inventory and monitor food availability, particularly for shelf-stable food items.
- Stock pantries with food supplements from deliveries, donations, food rescue program, purchases, and pantry redistribution.
- Communicate missing food groups to supervisor and pantry staff. Plan and implement daily restocking strategies with student leaders.
- Regularly organize back stock and storage spaces to ensure space is available for new inventory.
- Under direction the Manager, assist in communication with peer leaders for events, pantry updates, shift responsibilities, and hours.
- Prioritize, organize, and communicate daily tasks for student leaders which ensure efficient daily operations.
- Independently order and purchase food supplements and hygiene products to ensure shelf-stable practices and dietary relevant resources.
- Assist with weekly deliveries, particularly at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus. Transport food and hygiene products across the pantry network.
Administrative Duties
- Ethical budget discretion is expected.
- Attend and participate in weekly meetings with pantry staff, supervisor, and department. Attend and participate in regular trainings and events as directed.
- As directed, create digital and print materials to communicate updates to patrons. This includes use of canva and social media platforms.
- Other duties as assigned.
Customer Service
- Exhibit positive customer service and relationship building when interacting with pantry visitors.
- Role-model excellent customer service and de-stigmatizing behaviors to student leaders, addressing any instances which do not uphold these expectations.

- Has reliable transportation to and between assigned campus(es).
- Ability to uphold authorization responsibilities outlined by motor pool and SLCC’s Risk Management Agreement.. This includes a Valid UT drivers license and that the individual is at least 21 years old.
- Ability to speak more than one language
- Currently enrolled at SLCC
- Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
- Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
