Summary / General Purpose:
The Network Engineer will provide advanced technical assistance to system users for computer software, hardware, and peripheral equipment issues. Provide comprehensive administrative support for Virtual & Local Area Networks (VLAN) & (LAN) and Wide Area Networks (WAN). Manage IP addressing, switches, wireless controllers, and access points, as well as firewalls, VPN tunnels, MPLS, routers, and dynamic routing protocols.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Level I
- Support the daily operation and upkeep of network infrastructure: servers, data network, and phone systems.
- Monitor network traffic, identify issues, troubleshoot, problem-solve, and implement solutions involving network equipment to ensure optimal performance.
- Maintain servers and associated network gear, ensuring smooth operation.
- Participate in the execution of new network security measures.
- Investigate and resolve network vulnerabilities as identified by the department leader.
- Assist with network management to include end-to-end connectivity, wiring, Server configurations, LAN/WAN system integrity, and wireless communication networks.
- Maintain network security devices including firewalls, spam filters, intrusion detection systems, intrusion prevention systems, VPNs and remote access servers.
- Monitor computer systems to optimize performance for networks.
- Manage software for computers, phones, public address systems, and radios.
- Utilize the ticketing system to provide software, hardware, and network technical support, problem-resolution, and training to system end-users.
- Install, test, maintain, trouble-shoot, and repair computers, phones, public address system, and a variety of radio systems. Escalate and coordinate vendor repairs as necessary.
- Participate in the evaluation, testing, and selection of new hardware and software systems.
- Assist in planning and designing new installations, systems, and equipment.
- Install and maintain electronic surveillance and security systems.
- Make recommendations regarding hardware, software, and technology services budget.
- Track and record parts, equipment, and technology assets, and conduct annual asset inventory.
- Maintain licenses, hardware inventory, maintenance schedules, and ensure all workstations, laptops, and other devices are compliant with Anti-virus standards.
- Ensure regular system back-up for all systems.
- Collaborate with teams to maintain Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) network compliance.
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance during operating hours to perform the duties of the position, including on-call and flexible work schedule, and other duties as assigned.
Level II
- Responsible for comprehensive record-keeping and reporting of technology licenses, contracts, and services.
- Participate in the design and implement a robust network solutions such as Cisco routers/switches and firewalls.
- Diagnose and resolve complex networking issues, ensuring minimal downtime.
- Configure firewall rules, switch port settings, and Wireless Access Points.
- Make recommendations for enhancements to boost network performance.
- Recommend new network security measures.
- Utilize the ticketing system to identify problems, conduct root-cause analysis, and recommend / implement solutions. Escalate as needed.
Level III
- Design and implement robust network solutions such as Cisco routers/switches and Firewalls.
- Develop enhancements to boost network performance.
- Design new network security measures.
- Analyze ticketing system data to design system changes and solutions to improve technology services.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Eighteen (18) years of age or older.
- One (1) year of job-related experience with Computer/Information Systems and networks or combination of education and experience.
- Prior experience with Microsoft Server operating systems, Microsoft SQL, Windows 10 or newer versions
- Time management and organizational skills to consistently meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse audience of staff, customers, vendors, and general public, utilizing effective interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills, always acting with integrity and professionalism.
- Ability to speak, read, and write professionally, as well as compile, analyze and present information in English.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of programs
- Valid Utah driver license or ability to obtain within 2-weeks of date of hire.
- Ability to pass drug screening, fingerprint and criminal background check.
Additional Experience Level II
- Two (2) years of job-related experience Computer/Information Systems and networks
- Associate’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems or related field, or an additional 2-year combination of education and experience.
- Strong understanding of network administration, software deployment, and networking concepts with hands-on experience with firewalls, TCP/IP protocols, and public DNS.
- Experience supporting Data Science teams and research applications. Cloud experience (AWS).
- Familiar with ITIL/ITSM best practice standards.
Additional Experience Level III
- 4 years of job-related experience Computer/Information Systems and networks
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems or related field, or an additional 2-year combination of education and experience.
Working Conditions:
Extended periods of typing and computer work, regular standing, walking, kneeling, bending, crouching, climbing, and occasional lifting up to 40 pounds in a building facility environment.
