What are the responsibilities and job description for the Carpenter (Public Works) position at Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community?
Definition: Under direct supervision, provides skilled carpentry services and assists in inspections, construction and repairs of commercial and educational facilities within the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community in accordance with building and safety code regulations. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-exempt, and is considered a DRIVING position.
Essential Functions: (Essential functions may vary among positions, but may include the following tasks, knowledge, abilities, skills, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.)
- Assist in constructing and repairing structural woodwork, counters, cabinets, partitions, floors, windows, doors, building framework, trim, concrete forms, foundations, footings, sidewalks, ramps, and roofing in commercial facilities working from blueprints, drawings, work orders, and/or oral instructions.
- Safely operates electrical/power/manual tools and equipment, including but not limited to generators and compressors, and other equipment used in the carpentry portions of SRPMIC construction and maintenance projects. Tools may include, but are not limited to: hammer, jackhammer, drill, sander, plane, router, table saw, circular saw, cope saw, reciprocating saw, miter saw, jigsaw, speed square, tape measure, level, plumb, and utility knife.
- Safely loads and unloads equipment and materials at job sites; drives to and from job site. Operates pickup truck, forklift, or crane, as well as other equipment directed by supervisor.
- Measures, cuts, lifts and fastens lumber, steel studs, drywall, roofing, insulation, doors, windows, cabinets and trim in the construction and maintenance of commercial facilities and SRPMIC infrastructure.
- Measures and estimates aggregate quantities, mixes cement, sand, and water to produce concrete, grout, or slurry, using hoe, trowel, tamper, scraper, or concrete mixing machine. Molds expansion joints using edging tools, jointers, and straightedge.
- Coordinates with the Community’s Compliance Division to ensure all construction activities conform to building and safety codes.
- Reads and follows sketches, diagrams or blueprints showing location of carpentry fixtures, equipment, and/or structures. Assists in preparing material inventory lists for construction projects based on plans, specifications, work orders, and oral instructions.
- Assists in coordinating carpentry work with other construction trades.
- Assists with the demolition and removal of abandoned materials as necessary to provide construction and maintenance of commercial facilities and SRPMIC infrastructure.
- Provides on the job training and assist in the development of building maintenance workers and apprentices in learning carpentry skills necessary in completing carpentry/renovation projects. Reviews trainees work to ensure it is completed according to required standards and specifications.
- Performs other job related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance departmental operation.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:
- Knowledge of general policies, procedures and standards followed in construction trades.
- Knowledge of current OSHA rules and regulations; knowledge of current building and safety codes.
- Knowledge of proper use of carpentry equipment and tools, including entry-level knowledge in reading and interpreting blueprints, diagrams, and sketches.
- Knowledge of carpentry methods, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment related to construction and maintenance of commercial and educational facilities and SRPMIC infrastructure.
- Knowledge of carpentry principles, concepts and practices related to construction and maintenance of commercial and educational facilities and SRPMIC infrastructure.
- Skill and accuracy in measuring, cutting and fastening lumber, steel studs, drywall, roofing and trim in the construction and maintenance of commercial and educational facilities and SRPMIC infrastructure.
- Skill in the proper inspection, installation and repair of carpentry fixtures and equipment.
- Skill in safely operating electrical/power/manual tools and equipment.
- Ability to work in dirt and dusty conditions.
- Ability to work in weather-exposed situation.
- Ability to work at heights up to 50 feet.
- Ability to follow oral or written instructions.
- Ability to lift, stand, bend, stoop and carry objects, including but not limited to carpentry tools, materials and equipment, weighing 50 - 90 pounds and to otherwise physically perform and complete carpentry tasks as directed by supervisor.
Education & Experience: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and two years’ post-apprenticeship carpentry experience.
- For enrolled Community members without a GED, must obtain a GED. Requires participation in the HR GED Program and successful completion of the Arizona state certified exam in order to continue employment with SRPMIC.
Equivalency – Any equivalent combination of training and experience that would enable the candidate to satisfactorily perform and meet the duties and responsibilities required may be considered in meeting the stated minimum qualifications.

Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License.
