Under general supervision from the Child Find Program Coordinator, the Child Find Parent Educator assists families within the community to locate available early childhood intervention services and provides home-based visitation program for children with special needs.


Primary Job Functions:  Primary functions may include the following tasks, knowledge, abilities, skills, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions within this classification.

Job Duties:

  • Actively recruits Community Members aged birth – 5 to complete developmental screening.
  • Conducts Child Find and public awareness by developing a consistent plan to ensure that all children are identified early.
  • Conducts developmental screenings throughout the year from referrals and Child Find Screening events.  Included are: Ages and Stages questionnaire , OAE (hearing) and SPOT (vision)
  • Reviews and assures accurate eligibility determination on documents of medical, developmental, family history and other information before submitting referrals to AZEIP, MPS, and other agencies on the behalf of the parents/guardians.
  • Completes developmental screenings for all children enrolled in early childhood education programs (FACE, ECEC waitlist, Early Enrichment, home-based visitation programs).
  • Screens all children that have services with Social Services and CPS.
  • Completes initial intake information on all identifiable children’s eligibility requirements.
  • Educates families on age appropriate childhood developmental issues and skills.
  • Serves as an educational community liaison by ensuring that parents understand their parental rights, roles, and responsibilities.
  • Communicates with Community parents on a regular basis about various programming available in the Community for Early Childhood Education.
  • Coordinates the development of the IFSP or IEP for services to children with disabilities and their families based on the needs identified by the Team as a result of assessment evaluations and diagnosis.
  • Close communications with physicians, physical and occupational therapist, speech and language pathologist and other participating agencies involved in the child’s early intervention services.
  • Provides home-based visitation services to children that have an IFSP/IEP. Home-visit lesson plans are based on the child’s individual goals set by family members and the team model.
  • Drives vehicle to parent’s homes in order to continuously provide home-visits to families on topics such as, early intervention, child development, child diagnosis and parent education. Will coordinate transportation as needed.
  • Establishes and schedules service coordination meetings for families with special needs children ages infant – 5 years old.
  • Records and monitors developmental screenings of children who are referred to the program.
  • Tracks children that are not eligible for services early intervention services.
  • Helps with the coordination and tracking of a community based annual parental survey.
  • Identification of families in need of early intervention services.
  • Works in the Community clinic to screen children that have appointments for well-baby exams.
  • Maintains positive rapport with families to ensure all needs are met.
  • Coordinate family meetings.
  • Attends IEP/IFSP meetings, DDD quarterly medical reviews, Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team, CPS caseworkers, Social Services, HHS/IHS nurses, Developmental Specialist, Education Staff with Mesa Public Schools meetings as part of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Assist ECEC staff with training on how to provide continued services between home and school.
  • Trains Early Childhood Education staff on how to complete Ages and Stages questionnaire. Attends staff and family meetings.
  • Assists in the planning/coordination of Child Find health fairs and other community events throughout the year.
  • Assist families with transition from Child Find to kindergarten.
  • Assures that the child’s records are maintained by the program are confidential and are in accordance with grant requirements.

 

General Duties

  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

 

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Other Characteristics

  • The History, culture, traditions, and customs of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community
 

Knowledge of:

  • Navigating through AHCCCS, Arizona Long-term Care, DDD and private insurance plans
  • Early intervention process as well as the IDEA, Part B and C
  • Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSP) and Individualized Education Plans (IEP)
  • Multiple approaches with academics and behavior to support the student at their level and increase their ability to succeed in their current environment
  • Children with Disabilities and necessary age appropriate supports and interventions needed for specific disabilities

 

Skilled in:

  • Training prepared educational materials to the public
  • Public speaking and group facilitation
  • Different tools or approaches used to assist students with disabilities
  • Scheduling, planning, and conducting meetings with families and outside resources
  • MS Office Suite and general office equipment

 

Ability to:

  • Be organized and complete paperwork in a timely fashion and meet compliance deadlines
  • Communicate and work professionally with people of all ages, including children to provide supports and interventions
  • Track and record various work assignments and student behaviors
  • Meet the tribal insurance requirements and transport students and families

Education and Experience:  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Education (Special Education or Early Childhood). Must have a minimum of three (3) years’ work experience in the field of Early Childhood Development, Education, or Early Intervention Services. AZ Teaching Certification Preferred.

Driving Requirement: Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License.

Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.


Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.

Terms of Employment:  This position is treated as a full-time non-exempt position scheduled for 40 hours per week.

Must be able to pass a Pre-Employment Drug Test and extensive Fingerprint and Background Check. Employee is Subject to Random Drug Testing and completion of a Background Check every five (5) years.
