What are the responsibilities and job description for the Construction Foreman position at Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community?
Under supervision by the Construction Project Supervisor, performs skilled trade work and leads work crews on commercial and residential construction project sites. Provides training to trade apprentices. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-exempt.
Distinguishing Features: The Construction Foreman provides supervision of day to day activities and work crews on assigned project job sites. The Construction Foreman performs skilled trade work for primarily commercial facilities and must be familiar with all aspects of commercial building construction. The position is expected to physically perform trades work and teach subordinates and apprentices through demonstration and explanation. The Construction Foreman will assist the Construction Project Supervisor in evaluating performance of subordinate staff.
Essential Functions: (Essential functions may vary among positions, but may include the following tasks, knowledge, abilities, skills, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.)
1. Oversees and coordinates daily work activity on job sites. Assists in resolving conflicts between drawings and project conditions in the field. Monitors work in progress, maintains work logs, and provides daily updates to assigned Supervisor. Monitors and records labor hours for crews on assigned projects.
2. Provides daily supervision and instruction to job site personnel and assigned apprentices doing on the job training. Assists in developing and coordinating training of assigned staff on requirements of their positions. Evaluates employees work performance and works with employees to correct deficiencies.
3. Responsible for job site and personnel safety. Conducts safety training in the proper use of tools and equipment. Ensures all assigned staff have the proper tools, PPE, and equipment to properly complete their assigned tasks. Reports jobsite accidents and injuries to assigned Supervisor and provides assistance in investigating accidents.. Identifies possible job site hazards including possible asbestos or lead containing materials, unsafe conditions and unsafe tools and equipment. Removes unsafe tools and equipment from service and coordinates with assigned Supervisor for repair or disposal as necessary.
4. Prepares material inventory and “take off” lists. Assists in preparing cost estimates and schedules for projects and work orders. Checks deliveries and receives construction materials on project sites. Coordinates work and schedules with other construction trades to avoid scheduling conflicts.
5. Regularly performs work of the following types: demolition; structural steel stud and wood framing; installs counters, cabinets, partitions, floors, windows, doors, trim; forming, placing and finishing concrete for foundations, footings, sidewalks, ramps; installing roofing on commercial facilities; reads and follows instructions on blueprints, drawings, project specifications, installation instructions, user manuals, and/or oral instructions.
6. Safely operates a variety of electrical/power/manual construction tools and equipment including but not limited to generators, compressors, hammers, jackhammers, drills, sanders, planes, routers, table saws, circular saws, reciprocating saws, miter saws, jigsaws, speed squares, tape measures, levels, plumb bobs, utility knives, trowels, tamps, screeds, nail guns, ladders, lifts, forklifts, loaders, shovels, rakes, brooms. Safely loads and unloads equipment and materials at job sites; drives to and from job site. Operates pickup trucks, forklifts, and other equipment as necessary.
7. Measures, cuts, lifts, fastens, mixes and handles a variety of construction materials including lumber, steel studs, drywall, roofing, insulation, paint, concrete, adhesives, tiles, and carpet.
8. Performs other job-related tasks as required
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:
- Knowledge of general policies, procedures and standards followed in construction trades.
- Knowledge of current OSHA rules and regulations; knowledge of current building and safety codes.
- Knowledge of methods, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment related to construction and maintenance of commercial and educational facilities and SRPMIC infrastructure.
- Knowledge of trade principles, concepts and practices related to construction and maintenance of commercial and educational facilities and SRPMIC infrastructure.
- Skill in determining work solutions and evaluating progress for construction and maintenance projects.
- Skill and accuracy in measuring, cutting and fastening lumber, steel studs, drywall, roofing and trim in the construction and maintenance of commercial and educational facilities and SRPMIC infrastructure.
- Skill in the proper inspection, installation and repair of fixtures and equipment.
- Skill in safely operating electrical/power/manual tools and equipment.
- Skill in leading and directing work crews by effective example.
- Skill in using computers and software to communicate via e-mail and prepare written reports.
- Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both in writing and verbally.
- Ability to read and comprehend blueprints, drawings, specifications, installation instructions, user manuals, construction schedules, and other written or oral instructions.
- Ability to supervise, instruct and evaluate personnel.
- Ability to work in dirt and dusty conditions.
- Ability to work in weather-exposed situations including heat and cold.
- Ability to work at heights up to 50 feet using ladders and lifts with appropriate fall protection devices.
- Ability to lift, stand, bend, stoop and carry objects, including but not limited to carpentry tools, materials and equipment, weighing 50 - 90 pounds and to otherwise physically perform the duties necessary of the position.
- Education: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
- Experience: Three (3) years field experience as journeyman in one or a variety of construction fields including steel stud framing, drywall, tape & texture, painting, flooring, concrete, or roofing, with the ability to learn other trades as necessary. Journeyman Certification preferred. On the Job Training (OJT) will count towards journeyman experience.
- Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.
- Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.
- Insurability: Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License and meet the SRPMIC insurance standards.
