Definition: Under the general supervision of the Aquatics Programs Manager, monitors public use of swimming pool area, maintains public safety, performs rescue and first aid functions, perform responsible and technical work in the protection of life.   Provides safety supervision of all pool related activities for patrons of all ages at the Community’s swimming areas. Employees in this classification work seasonal schedules. This job class is treated as FLSA Nonexempt.

Essential Functions:   Essential functions may vary among positions and may include the following tasks and other characteristics.   This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be comprehensive list of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.

1.  Safety:

  • Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards.
  • Maintains order in the pool and adjoining areas.
  • Responds to emergency situations by performing rescue and first aid services including CPR.
  • Enforces pool rules, policies, ordinances and regulations governing the conduct of people using the swimming pool facilities in a fair and equitable manner.


2.  Administration:

  • Documents accidents and other pool-related incidents according to Community Recreational Services Department requirements.


3.  Training:

  • Participates in recurring training including, but not limited to, rescue skills, in-service training, and physical conditioning.


4.  Customer Service:

  • Answers inquiries and provides public information regarding pool hours, activities and events.
  • Instruct scheduled classes in the fundamentals of swimming and water safety. 


5.  Pool Maintenance:

  • Cleans pool areas, concession area, bathrooms and dressing rooms, and equipment in accordance with local & Community health/sanitary standards.
  • Inspects and maintain lifesaving equipment and apparatus.


6.  Special Events:

  • Assists with special events as required and assigned by Community Recreational Services Department.


7.  Miscellaneous:

  • Performs other Community Recreational Services Department and pool related duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics

  • Knowledge of the history, culture, laws, customs and traditions of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of rescue, lifesaving, first aid and CPR skills related to the swimming pool environment.
  • Knowledge of Community rules and regulations regarding the swimming pool environment.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles.
  • Knowledge of techniques and methods of swimming instruction for all age groups.

  • Skill performing the physical demands of Lifeguard duties and responsibilities.
  • Skill using Lifeguard safety related equipment.
  • Skill swimming with proficiency and endurance and meet standards of swimming competency as may be established by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. 

  • Ability to administer First Aid and CPR.
  • Ability to perform rescue operations.
  • Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to work in a chemically treated swimming pool and in direct sunlight.
  • Ability to perform safety checks of pool equipment and pool areas.
  • Ability to firmly but tactfully enforce pool rules and regulations.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to recognize and respond quickly and accurately in an emergency situation including the ability to detect sounds and visual cues of an emergency nature against a distracting background of normal noise and physical activity.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.
  • Ability to detect odors.
  • Ability to observe swimmers in and around the pool area.
  • Ability to sit for up to 40 minutes per work shift rotation on a lifeguard chair or station, including a station reached by ladder.
  • Ability to work with patrons of all ages, from infants to mature adults.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public and other employees.
  • Ability to use tools common to the performance of the duty including whistle, megaphone, rescue tube and first aid equipment.
  • Ability to perform various clerical duties and operate office equipment including a personal computer, Microsoft Office applications, and other related software.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other Community staff and the public.
  • Minimum of one (1) season aquatic experience as a Lifeguard is preferred. 
  • Current certifications in Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, and First-Aid from a nationally recognized institution is required.
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification OR equivalent certification is highly desirable.


  • Equivalency: Equivalent combinations of education and experience that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered providing certification requirements are met.


  • Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill
  • May be required to work outside normal business hours including; flexible work hours, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be at least 15 years of age.
  • May be exposed to a variety of weather conditions including severe hot weather and occasional wet climates.
  • Must have the ability and willingness to maintain physical conditioning sufficient for performing long periods of observation and tasks associated with pool related activities and management.
  • May be required to stand, sit, or walk for extended periods.
  • Must be able to lift and carry special, heavy equipment or other objects.
  • Employees in, and applicants applying for, jobs providing direct services to children are subject to the “Community Code of Ordinances”, Chapter 11, “Minors”, Article X. “Investigation of Persons Working With Children”.

Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
