Under general supervision from the Clinical Director of Optometry, the Optician primary duty is to assist healthcare professionals to provide quality eye and optical care to communityThis job class is treated as FLSA Non-Exempt. 

 

Essential Functions:  Essential functions may vary among positions and may include the following tasks and other characteristics.  This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive list of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.

1. Administrative: Task involving non-clinical work includes:
  • Handle various administrative business tasks, such as keeping track of prescriptions and ordering and maintaining vision center inventory
  • Write work orders for laboratory techs and provide them with the information needed to make new lenses
  • Contact patient to let them know glasses are ready to dispense.
  • Greets and acquaint all patients with office procedures and tests so they have clear understanding/expectation of the process and length of time.
  • Request records, prepare correspondence, and help in referral process.
  • Ensure necessary optical supplies are always stocked. Notify when an order is needed.
  • Ensure all patients phone calls are returned by the end of each day.
  • Front desk reception, answering phones, scheduling appointments.
2. Clinical: Optician Task involving clinical work includes:
  • Receive prescriptions from customers for eyeglasses
  • Measure the faces and eyes of customers, including the distance between pupils.
  • Assist customers in choosing eyeglass frames and lenses.
  • Work with customers to ensure that eyeglasses fit properly
  • Repair and replace eyeglass frames as needed
  • Provide education to customers about their eyewear; show customers how to take care of their contact lenses
  • Ensure all equipment are cleaned thoroughly between every patients and closed down by the end of each day.
  • Seek advice if needed; report any instrument or equipment repairs.
  • Help maintain a smooth flow of patients.
  • Depending on experience participate and assist the optometrist in the contact lenses fitting.
  • Perform other duties related to assist in pretesting when needed (records patient interview, chief complaint, visual acuity, auto refraction, unstill eye drops, as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of the history, culture, customs and traditions of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of eye care and optical terminology.
  • Knowledge of equipment used in eye care management. 

  • Ability to provide compassionate care to community members.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with patients, visitors, physicians, and staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to meet and comply with HIPAA/Confidentiality policies and procedures and ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive patient information.
  • Ability to relate to diverse cultures and specifically the Salt River Community and/or other Native American cultures and community health services.
  • Excellent accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 20 lbs.

Education and Experience:  High school diploma or GED required. 

  • For enrolled Community members without a GED, must obtain a GED.  Requires participation in the HR GED Program and successful completion of the Arizona state certified exam in order to continue employment with SRPMIC.
    • Must obtain/maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within first 6 months of employment.
    • 2 year prior work experience in an Ophthalmology, Optical or Optometry center required
    • Valid Arizona Optician License is required

 

Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.

 

Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.

  • May be required to work outside normal work hours including nights, weekends and holidays.

Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
