This position is responsible for assuring the integrity of sterilization and maintaining of supplies, instruments and equipment in accordance with JCAHO and AORN standards. Inventory control of all supplies. The Sterile Core Technician will be required to fully understand the purpose and operation of Perioperative Services along with having the ability to make decisions based on sound judgment when a situation dictates.
This is a full-time position working Monday-Friday from 6:45am - 3:15pm.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The individual in this position reports to the Perioperative Services Director. This position works closely with staff members and physicians in order to promote optimal care for the surgical patient.
SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES (not limited to):
- Responsible for rotation of sterile supplies and pulling of outdated supplies, acquiring supplies for daily and specialty items, maintaining an index system for location of supplies, putting supplies away and assisting OR personnel in obtaining supplies for cases in progress.
- Responsible for maintaining order and cleanliness in the Center Core or other supply areas.
- Responsible for organizing and updating doctor’s preference cards as needed. As well as inputting doctor’s computer preference cards and editing when needed.
- Responsible for ordering drug supplies from Pharmacy.
- Assisting I.S. and staff with charging and price inquiries of stock for patient billing.
- Ability to communicate with staff on discontinued and BO items, and ability to locate or create temporary or replacement stock.
- Ability to act as a liaison between hospital, physicians and company representatives for specialty items and inquiries as needed.
- Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
- Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes, but is not limited to: security and safety, understanding of MSDS, equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, safe lifting and body mechanics.
- Ensures self-compliance with organization policies and procedures, as well as labor agreements.
- Ensures the interface with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive with the organization’s values.
- Conducts self in a professional manner and ensures personal appearance meets the standards necessary to perform the job function while representing the organization.
- Ensures that additional accountabilities, as may be required, by management be handled in a manner necessary to meet organizational standards.
- Manage/Maintain asset location for OR, Pain, GI and OB
- Manage/Maintain all asset locations inventory stock and non-stock.
- Manage/Maintain consignment supplies.
- Maintains inventory and sets par levels.
- Act as liaison between EPIC and Premier – work with staff to maintain preference cards accurately and manage/maintain portions of EPIC and Premier.
- Responsible for quarterly inventory for all asset locations.
- Responsible for approving routine day to day PO’s.
- Assist with EPIC charges when needed.
- Act as a liaison between surgical reps and OR for regarding upcoming cases that require rep support.
- Responsible for overseeing that daily cases are picked.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Education:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Certification:
- CST, IAHCSMM or NICHSPOP certification preferred.
- Basic Life Support Heartsaver (HS) level to be completed within three (3) months of hire.
- Experience:
- Surgical Scrub Technician or Sterile Processing Technician experience preferred.
- Skills/Competencies:
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn and apply basic principles of sterile technique to daily job tasks.
- Good organizational skills.
- Physical ability to tolerate the stress and pace of the Operating Room atmosphere.
- Basic computer knowledge (MS Word, Excel).
- Working knowledge of an O.R. setting.
- Demonstrates competency on equipment listed on department specific checklist.
- Critical thinking skills: Seeks resources for direction, when necessary. Performs independent problem solving. Decision-making is logical and deliberate.
- Performs actions that demonstrate accountability. Exercises safe judgment in decision-making. Practices within legal and ethical guidelines.
- Demonstrates competency in ability to care for customers/patients across the age continuum.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Frequent and, at times, prolonged standing, walking, lifting, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, pushing, and pulling.
- Manual dexterity.
- Heavy physical effort, ability to lift/carry up to 50 lbs. (supplies and equipment).
- Good reading eyesight. Able to see clearly 20 feet or more, to judge distance and space relationships, and to see peripherally. Full visual acuity, color perception.
- Ability to communicate using verbal and/or written skills for accurate exchange of information with physicians, nurses, health care professionals, patients and/or family, and the public.
