What are the responsibilities and job description for the Children's Residential Program Staff position at Samaritan House?
Position Summary: This position provides direct client services to youth ages 11-17 years in a residential program. The Hallow is a residential group home for children that have been sex trafficked and/or sexually exploited. Responsibilities include providing supervision of and engagement with residents and ensuring their safety. Shifts are variable and include late afternoon, evenings and overnight during weekdays, weekends, and holidays. This is a part-time position ranging from 16-30 hours per week, depending on the shifts.
Job Responsibilities:
· Ensure residents have a safe, supportive, calming, and therapeutic environment at all times.
· Monitor and supervise residents in care and address immediate concerns.
· Follow a daily routine as presented for a predictable environment for the residents.
· Assist with and implement daily nutritional meals according to dietary guidelines.
· Provide assistance and re-directives to residents.
· Prepare residents for daily virtual school and therapeutic activities.
· De-escalate situations in which residents may harm themselves or others.
· Identify and inform necessary points of contact when emergencies arise, such as back-up and supervisory staff, law enforcement, probation, and other professionals as necessary.
· Carry out individual treatment plans and behavioral contracts developed by the case manager and counselors/therapist.
· Monitor resident’s progress and concerns, specifically at each end of shift ensuring the next BHA and supervisory staff members are aware of any information that may be important within their shift.
· Assist in providing independent living skills such as keeping their bedroom clean, appropriate hygiene care, etc.
· Conduct room and bed checks with each resident particularly during third-shift night hours.
· Provide prescribed medications by a physician, ensure medication is taken, ensure proper documentation of prescription hand-outs, and ensure all medications are always stored properly.
· Carry out light housekeeping duties, such as sweeping, mopping floor, doing dishes, cleaning countertops and taking out the trash accordingly.
· Any other duties as assigned.
Required Background:
- Have a baccalaureate degree in human services: or
- Have an associate’s degree and three months’ experience working with children; or
· Be a high school graduate or have a G.E.D. and have six months of experience working with children.
- Preferred, but not required, hands-on experience in a group-home environment and/or in the mental health field specifically involving emotional disturbances and crisis intervention for youth.
- Must be able to pass an extensive background check including Fieldprint fingerprint-based background check through State Police Central Criminal Records Exchange, a Virginia Central Registry and Criminal Background Check, and deemed Eligible by DBHDS.
- Valid Virginia Driver’s License in good standing and clean driving record.

- Motivational interviewing skills, encouraging residents to follow their care plans and goals.
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to determine the best care for each resident.
- Flexibility to follow changes in strategies used for residents.
- Ability to document resident records.
- Computer literacy to maintain and manage documentation filed and stored on computers.
- Reliable transportation and license to drive, including driver’s insurance.
Required Physical Skills:
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle; a car, truck, and van
- Ability to use a computer and telephone
- Ability to conduct and attend meetings
- Ability to lift 25 pounds
- Ability to walk, climb and reach
