Director, Virtual Design and Construction

The Director Virtual Design and Construction is responsible for the leadership and execution of an effective, customer focused VDC/BIM program that supports the growth and scale of our organization. This role requires a deep understanding of both virtual design and construction methodologies and construction project management, as well as the ability to communicate and teach associated principles to all stakeholders. The Director collaborates across the organization in the application of VDC tools in project pursuits, project development/preconstruction, and field operations. This individual builds and leads a cross-regional team with a culture of operational excellence, innovation, and customer service.

Responsibilities:

• Develop and implement the overall VDC strategy and roadmap, in alignment with company strategy and corporate and regional goals & objectives.
• Develop, maintain and report VDC-related goals and performance metrics; monitor and analyze departmental and project performance metrics related to VDC, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing corrective actions.
• Establish and maintain company- and project-specific VDC standards and protocols, including BIM (Building Information Modeling) guidelines and best practices; develop, document, implement, teach, and reinforce The Samet Way (TSW) for job role and departmental responsibilities and organizational results.
• Read and interpret project specifications and requirements; drafts project specific VDC work scopes and budgets.
• Oversee and coordinate VDC-related activities across multiple projects, ensuring compliance with project requirements including work scope, schedule, and budget.
• Lead designers, Owners, and project teams through a productive and efficient VDC process for multiple large projects; facilitate stakeholder meetings to create consensus and progress toward desired project outcomes.
• Collaborate with project managers, architects, engineers, and trade contractors to integrate VDC processes into project workflows and deliverables.
• Provide technical expertise and guidance in the use of VDC tools and technologies, such as data collection, 3D modeling, clash detection, and augmented/virtual reality.
• Develop and implement 4-D and 5-D scheduling and visualization methodologies to enhance project planning and coordination, identify potential project risks, and optimize construction sequencing.
• Support project teams in the implementation of VDC program activities on their projects through proactive training, support, and follow-through.
• Collaborate with business development and marketing teams to promote VDC capabilities and offerings to clients and stakeholders.
• Lead and manage the Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) team, including hiring, coaching/mentoring, developing identified VDC career competencies, creating opportunities for career growth, and evaluating performance.
• Monitor industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in virtual design and construction, and recommend their adoption to drive innovation and efficiency.

Prerequisites:

• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to identify and resolve issues related to VDC implementation and execution throughout the lifecycle of construction projects.
• Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas and technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, architecture, or VDC-related field.
• 8-10 years broad experience in the construction industry, including significant project responsibilities in construction project management or field operations, with a focus on virtual design and construction.
• Experience with the various construction project delivery methods (Design-Build, Design-Bid-Build, Construction Manager at Risk, Integrated Project Delivery), and the implementation of VDC for each delivery method; experience in developing and managing CPM schedules.
• Proven track record of successfully building and managing teams, with the ability to inspire, motivate, and develop team members.
• Deep knowledge of virtual design and construction technologies, including BIM software, clash detection tools, visualization tools, project collaboration platforms (e.g., AutoDesk Suite including Revit, Navisworks, BIM360, 3ds Max; Revizto; SketchUp); including integrating schedule data and using visualization tools/techniques.
• Proficiency in clash detection and coordination best practices, including understanding clash detection workflows, clash avoidance strategies, and VDC/BIM coordination meetings.
• Familiarity with laser scanning and point cloud standards, including ASTM E57.02 for 3D imaging data exchange or the USIBD Level of Accuracy (LOA) specification.
• Familiarity with construction industry standards and best practices related to VDC and BIM, such as LOD (Level of Development), COBie (Construction Operations Building Information Exchange), NBIMS-US (National BIM Standards – US), and AIA CAD Layer Guidelines.
• Professional certifications in VDC (e.g., CM-BIM, VDCP) and/or related software applications or virtual design and construction preferred.
