Description
This Academic Advisor will provide proactive, holistic academic advising, case management, and support for undergraduate students within the School of Public Health. The position will collaborate with faculty / staff at all levels in providing support to areas, including but not limited to orientation, matriculation, retention, recruitment, and admissions. The School of Public Health is home to four undergraduate degree programs, four minors, and four fast-track degree programs.
Job Duties
- Advises undergraduate students in the School of Public Health.
- Provides guidance to students regarding course selection and majors and minors offered, appropriate academic schedule, number of hours that may be taken, probation, and / or suspension, and graduation requirements.
- Coordinates / works with the Office of the Registrar to ensure graduation lists and records are accurate.
- Provides academic advisement within context of academic policies and procedures.
- Monitors student performance and intervenes for those who are on academic warning or are underperforming.
- Evaluates students and communicates referrals as appropriate to tutoring, more specialized counseling, Academic Success Center, Career Development, spiritual or mental health, disability resources or other campus service.
- Assists in developing and maintaining retention programs to ensure acclimation and orientation to Samford University.
- Makes effective use of advising software (currently DegreeWorks) to document advisees' progress toward graduation, and maintains academic files.
- Proactively contacts and is available for student advisees on a regular basis, including maintenance of office hours and use of scheduling software.
- Maintains all undergraduate student records / data within the School of Public Health to permit statistical analyses needed for various reports.
- In collaboration with the Dean, Department Chairs, and Director of Graduate and Undergraduate Student Services, maintains sections of the Samford University catalog and website for accuracy.
- Participates in organized and self-directed, professional development activities.
- Represents the School of Public Health on university committees as assigned.
- Works with School of Public Health Recruiter to set up and participate in preview days, open houses and other recruitment events.
- Assists the School of Public Health Marketing and Communications Manager in the development of undergraduate recruitment materials.
- Performs other duties as assigned or needed.
