Description
The Residence Manager (RM) is a live-on staff member responsible for the day-to-day management functions associated with a particular area of the residential living environment. This is a one academic year position that serves from July 29 to May 31. Applicants may re-apply for this position at the end of each year. Functions include, but are not limited to, training and supervising the Residence Hall staff; opening and closing of residence halls; administering residence hall programming and activities; providing discipline and accountability for residents and staff; and facilities management.
Job Duties
1. Training :
- In collaboration with the Residence Life Coordinator (RLC), build an effective Residence Life staff through training and programming activities;
- Assist the Assistant Director of Residence Life and Residence Life Coordinators in training the Senior Resident Assistants (SRAs) and Resident Assistants (RAs)
throughout the academic year; RMs will be highly involved in training their staff at the beginning of the academic year.
Attend all Housing and Residence Life retreats and trainings.2. Opening and Closing of the Halls :
Collaborate with the Facilities and Safety Coordinator and other Residence Life staff members to efficiently open and close the residence halls as the academic calendar dictates.3. Staff Supervision and Programming :
Effectively supervise the Residence Hall staff;Meet and greet students on a daily basis; make concerted efforts to get to know residents and assist RAs in providing opportunities for residents to get to know eachother;Attend and help lead RA meetings and functions associated with RA / student activities and programming when possible;Attend staff meetings established by the RLC;Meet with SRAs and RAs as directed by the RLC;Participate in the Residence Life On-Call Phone rotation;Work with RAs, SRAs and the RLC in developing and maintaining the residential community;Work weekly office schedules as directed by the RLC;Use Samford "Bean Counter" Card to purchase hall activity supplies, support RAs and SRAs in planning, advertising, and executing hall / building activities;Time Worked per week : approximately 15 hours, split between office work and other duties;4. Discipline and Accountability
As needed / directed, mediate roommate conflicts and personnel conflicts;In conjunction with residence hall staff, monitor, evaluate, report and assess student conduct in the residential environment.5. Facilities Management
Conduct building inspections at a minimum twice a month; as necessary report / file work order requests; make Facilities and Safety Coordinator aware of safety hazardsand concerns;Assist RAs with monthly health and safety inspections as requested;Monitor SRA rooms for any health and safety concerns;In conjunction with Public Safety, conduct fire drills in the residence halls every semester;Conduct monthly fire equipment and safety inspections; report any malfunctioning or damaged equipment to Facilities Services and Residence Life's Facilities and Safety Coordinator;Assist the Facilities and Safety Coordinator in identifying, reporting, and monitoring maintenance concerns within and about the residential units;Assist the RLC in preparing the residence halls for students' occupancy to include building checks, key preparation and checks, room inspections, and maintenancefollow-ups;As necessary, monitor and assess residence hall damage;Assist the RLC in monitoring and managing the desk / office operation / function.6. Other
RMs are responsible for knowing, abiding by and enforcing all rules and regulations set by the University; RMs are not granted 24 hours visitation for personal privileges; guests of the opposite gender must be out of RMs apartments by a reasonable visitation hour; overnight visitation of the opposite gender is not permitted unless there exists a close family relationship;Residence Managers are expected to be on campus during scheduled break periods, which may include Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays; Residence Managers are expected to be on campus through the month of May; scheduled days off follow the administrative calendar of the University unless approved by their Residence LifeCoordinator or the Assistant Director of Residence Life;RMs cannot possess other employment, including babysitting, tutoring, and part-time jobs unless approved in writing by their Residence Life Coordinator;Other duties assigned by the Residence Life Coordinator, Assistant Director of Residence Life, or the Director of Residence Life.Qualifications
1. Residence Manager (RM) must possess a minimum of one year or two academic semesters of residence living experience; one year of Resident Assistant experience or at least one year of supervisory experience;2. Must be capable of handling multiple tasks and capable of managing and working with a diverse group of individuals;3. RMs should be an effective communicator possessing the ability to be sensitive to the needs and desires of students, parents, and staff;4. RMs must possess and exhibit a positive attitude, must be flexible and understand the principles of a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Candidates who are enrolled in graduate school are preferred.
2. All applicants must schedule 10-15 office hours weekly for RM position responsibilities.
