POSITION SUMMARY
A fully qualified level under the general supervision of the Design Supervisor. Coordinates and supervises design assignments and related work performed by contractors, junior designers, and technical support staff, or plans and completes highly technical designs. Optimize facilities for safe and effective flow of work. Positioning industrial plant designs in the most effective manner. Has a detailed understanding of how to optimize work processes and interdisciplinary communication from conceptual design through construction of a heavy-industrial project (namely, mining and minerals processing facilities, oil and gas plants, utilities, etc.)
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Uses initiative and judgment in evaluating, modifying and applying design practices and techniques and in resolving technical problems referred by subordinate group leaders.
- Develops guidelines and initiates investigations by junior drafters and designers.
- Estimates workload requirements on a project basis.
- Resolves project and priority conflicts with senior engineering personnel and project managers.
- May be required to act as a design consultant to the organization.
- Keeps informed of new design processes and drafting techniques and maintains current knowledge of the principles, requirements and practices of all related disciplines.
DIRECTION RECEIVED
- Works under general direction. Work is assigned in terms of objectives and is reviewed in terms of adherence to general policies, accuracy of methods and general efficiency.
DIRECTION OF OTHERS
- Coordinates the work of various units.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS PER JOB LEVEL
- Sr. Designer IV completion of trade or technical school program plus at least 10 years relevant experience. Continuing education is preferred.
- Sr. Designer III - completion of trade or technical school program plus at least 12 years relevant experience. Continuing education is preferred.
- Sr. Designer II - completion of trade or technical school program plus at least 14 years relevant experience. Continuing education is preferred.
- Sr. Designer I - completion of trade or technical school program plus at least 15 years relevant experience. Continuing education is preferred.
