Position Title: Tutor (During School Hours)
Employment Classification: Part-time, Non-Exempt, 10-month
Reports to: Head of School
Position Summary: Tutoring serves high school students by assisting with academic success strategies. The primary responsibilities of a tutor is to support students (tutees) to become more independent learners, persist in college, and reach their goals. Tutors provide individual and/or group tutoring to students to support work completion, primarily in math (Algebra and Geometry principles) and writing. Tutors meet with students to clarify and review concepts taught in class, explain processes and help students solve specific problems while supporting them to complete assignments. Tutoring supports classroom-centered activities, and as such, the emphasis and content of the tutoring sessions is determined by the student's needs. Approx. 20 hrs. per week. Flexible schedule during school hours (M-F 8:15 - 3:45)
Major Areas of Responsibility:
- Build a positive and trusting relationship with students
- Check in with students in 1:1 or smaller group settings
- Provide subject-specific content to help students Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences
- Recognize primary role to help students become more confident, more successful, self-directed learners
- Be direct and kind with students at the same time Provide direct assistance in the use of equipment, learning objects, and materials needed for student success
- Make appropriate referrals to other school and community resources as needed
Knowledge, Skill, and Experience Requirements:
- Associates Degree or 48 units of college preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of experience working with K – 12 youth required.
- Valid CPR & First Aide certification required.
- Bi-lingual/bi-literate English/Spanish preferred.
- Knowledge of basic record-keeping and organization techniques.
- Experience collaborating and working with a team.
- Possess a valid California driver’s license and proof of automobile insurance. Position requires DMV clearance.
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check, FBI/DOJ fingerprinting, TB test, and drug test

- Strong communication skills and the ability to build rapport with students and colleagues.
- Takes initiative in student advocacy and support.
Working Environment/Physical Requirements: Primarily a classroom or office environment. Physical requirements include standing, sitting, typing, bending, and lifting up to approximately 25 lbs.
Modification to work schedule may be made based on need of the Academy.
