POSITION TITLE: Librarian
EXEMPTION STATUS: Exempt
REPORTS TO: Principal
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: As assigned by contract, 2025-2026 school year
Primary Purpose:
Direct the operation of the school library/media center. Provide services and resources that allow students to develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and using information to solve problems. Incorporate curriculum and technology in the services and resources for students. Serve as teacher, materials expert, and curriculum adviser to ensure that library/media center is involved in instructional programs of the school.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification
Master’s degree from accredited college or university
Valid Texas teaching certificate
Valid Texas librarian or learning resources specialist certificate or endorsement
Special Knowledge/Skills
Knowledge of library media program
General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
Ability to instruct and manage student behavior
Strong technology skills
Strong organizational, communication (verbal and written), and interpersonal skills
Experience:
Two years classroom teacher experience
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Library Program Management
- Create an environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of students.
- Promote literacy and the enjoyment of reading.
- Plan and implement the library media program according to the needs of students and staff and consult with staff for the most effective use of library materials and facilities.
- Provide a schedule that assures easy access to the library media center for all students and staff.
- Incorporate district policies and procedures into the campus program.
- Assume responsibility for the selection, organization, and maintenance of materials according to policy.
- Provide input into the campus budget based on student/teacher requests and curricular/program needs.
- Work with the technology department in developing computer systems for library use.
- Plan and select electronic resources for use in the library.
- Manage Texas Library Connection (TLC) resources and interlibrary loan components.
- Prepare displays, exhibits, and bulletin boards.
- Coordinate a continuing evaluation of the library media program and implement changes based on findings.
- Weed collection according to district guidelines and in accordance with library standards.
- Conduct inventory in a timely manner and prepare inventory and year-end reports.
- Supervise the work of student aides and volunteers.
Instruction
- Support the instructional plans of the teacher in a coordinated, integrated library media center.
- Provide group instruction and individual user guidance for location of resources and development of research techniques which support instructional objectives.
- Serve as instructional resource consultant and information specialist to teachers and students.
- Provide orientation for students on how to retrieve, evaluate, and use information.
- Train users to develop search and retrieval skills to obtain information from online and network databases.
Professional Growth and Development
- Participate in trainings to remain updated on new trends in information retrieval and dispersal, computer-assisted research, collection development, technology, telecommunications, and multi-cultural education.
- Maintain familiarity with district initiatives to better serve the needs of students.
